Workshop #1

Tsang Tak Ping

Workshop: Draw My Mom, Draw My Dad: My Mom and Dad Gave Birth to the Local

Tsang Tak Ping sees fulfilling filial duties as an artist’s key to survival. The tenacious vitality and adaptability of the previous generation, alongside their adherence to and taste for exquisiteness in essential areas of life, and in particular, the folk wisdom behind food preservation, are all qualities which Tsang ardently admires. Having emigrated to Canada, Tsang's mother would pay an annual visit back to Hong Kong. And every time, she would still nonetheless be worried about her son— adding food to his fridge and making new clothes to put in his wardrobe. Tsang would hence like to invite the public to bring with them images or memories of their parents, and through the process of drawing, participants may reminisce their parents’ grace and kindness. Unfolding a discourse on locality is also encouraged by actively sharing their stories and drawing process with other participants.

*With materials provided by the organizer, participants will make drawings of their mom or dad, or both. Participants may bring with them images (or memories) of their parents. No drawing skills are required. It is the process, not the result, that counts.

*Sharing and discussing among participants: To share the drawing process and one's personal experiences in relation to the idea of 'localness/localism'.
