In the first installment of this magical middle-grade, Morrigan, a child who has always been subjected to unfair glances because everyone thinks she is cursed, is whipped off to the magical town of Nevermoor where she participates in the trials for the Wondrous society.

Morrigan is cursed and she is supposed to die on Eventide. Everyone blames her for everything that goes wrong. On the Eventide that she is supposed to die, she is whisked off by Jupiter North, a member of the Wundrous society to the Wunder town of Nevermoor. Then, she is entered into the trials of Wundrous society to establish her citizenship. Without knowing anything, she is asked to make it into the finals.

As the trials begin, she is helped by Jupiter's posse at his hotel. The first trial was to run through the town to find colored envelopes. For the second trial, they were tested by the Covens. She finds her first friend in Hawthorne, who is a dragon rider. Her last trial is to show off her talent, which she knows nothing about and Jupiter won't tell her. As she stands before the judges without any knowledge of her talents, Jupiter rushes to the judges and whispers something to them and she is in. When all the Patrons and the selected kids know that she is a Wundersmith, she is not anyone's favorite.
