Heartside Gleaning is a non-profit organization created in 2013 to address food insecurity and improve access to healthy fresh food for low-income families and people experiencing houselessness in the downtown Grand Rapids area.
Currently, the stakeholders of the Heartside Gleaning Initiative are predominantly located in the Heartside neighborhood near the heart of downtown. Since its formation in 2013, the Heartside Gleaning initiative has since expanded its services to additional neighborhoods facing similar challenges.
Seeing a need to expand their relationship with the greater community, the Heartside Gleaning Initiative and the Fulton Street Farmers Market formed an alliance. Since 1922, the non-profit organization Fulton Street Farmers Market has strived to connect hundred of farmers, food creators, and artists, and "aims to be a catalyst for an equitable and resilient food system in West Michigan" that connects people to health and their environment (Fulton Street Farmers Market).

As the community relations group, we used a people-centered design thinking process to map out ideas to improve community engagement, grow the gleaning initiative, and expand its benefits. The goals of our group are to provide incentives for vendors and volunteers, assess ways to include the community, and hear their desires and ideas about the gleaning initiative.
