The Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) is a sustainable farm on Grand Valley State University's campus where students can learn more about sustainable agriculture and practices, soil health and composition, the environment, and plant growing techniques to produce a bountiful harvest. There are many volunteer opportunities at the SAP where students can learn more about these topics and what goes into running a successful sustainable farm.
The SAP is a beneficial resource that would allow students to learn more about growing their own food, starting small with microgreens. With volunteer participation, our implementation plan is to hold workshops in the fall semester of 2023 for students to come out and learn how to grow their own microgreens.
There would be minimal cost to this plan. As the SAP runs on volunteers, there would be no employee cost, the only cost would be for seeds and extra supplies for the students who participate and don't have their own resources. Students are encouraged to bring their own containers, such as Tupperware, old plastic takeout containers, or even mason jars. Microgreens are also able to grow without soil, paper towel is an adequate substrate for them, but seedling mix will be provided for those who wish to use it.
