An assessment means much more than a "test". In our tutoring sessions, we assess children in a variety of ways and daily basis. We use the assessment results to help decide how and what to teach. In the first couple of tutoring sessions, we will go through these assessments:
Book and print awareness assessment
Phonological and phonemic awareness assessment
Phonics assessment
Sight words assessment
Spelling assessment
Reading comprehension assessment
In everyday tutoring, we frequently use formative assessments such as running record and observation sheets like this.
The formative assessments help promote learning by helping children see their strengths and weaknesses; They help children think critically about what they are learning and focus on understanding.
