Recommended teaching sequence of phonics skills

• Consonant and short vowel sounds

• CVC words--e.g. bat, pet, bug

• Short vowel words with blends and digraphs---e.g. grass, ship

• Long vowel CVCe words ---e.g.   make, ride, rope, mute

• Other single syllable long vowel words---goat, pain, lie

• Words with R controlled vowels---e.g. bird, corn, fur, her, far

• Words with complex vowels---e.g. walk, worm, cold

• Words with diphthongs---e.g. cow, couch, toy, join

• Simple multi-syllable words with common prefixes and suffixes

• More complex multi-syllable words
