My role as a reading coach goes far beyond helping with homework. I am experienced with ADD/ADHD/Dyslexia/Word calling learners. I am a classroom teacher with 16 years ESL teaching experience and 7 years in person/online tutoring experience. I am a teacher who reads with your child.
For the first reading session or two, we will be using a variety of assessments (word lists, reading passages, spelling inventory, etc.) with your child to discover his or her reading and comprehension level as well as strengths and weaknesses.
Sessions will include a variety of activities based on your child’s needs such as reading books, magazine articles, phonics readers, playing games, using manipulative etc. But above all, we will read. We make it our goal that the most time allotted in our tutoring session is for your child to read.
Hands-on activities and games make sounding out words fun
Shared reading explicitly teaches inferring, summarizing, retelling and synthesizing.
Graphic organizer deepens your child’s understanding. Getting the story made easy
Interactive book discussion enhances understanding of literature; Novel study chapter questions motivate reluctant readers to share own thoughts
Authentic vocabulary building expands academic word bank
Play word reading game-y,igh,ie
Practice decoding in reading
Practice writing CVC words
Practice writing a sentence
I initially evaluate students’ strengths and weaknesses in regard to decoding, reading comprehension, and spelling knowledge. I then design lessons specific to each student through reading. (Reading to student, reading with student, reading by student)
We cover all aspects in regard to reading in our tutoring sessions.
Phonological & phonemic awareness
They are the foundation of sounding out words. e.g. rhyming, syllable segmenting, isolating phonemes. Students learn through rhyming and oral games.
Phonics
It is about how to decode written words. Students learn through hands on activities and word sorts.
Comprehension strategies
Comprehension is key. Comprehension strategies include making connections, asking questions, predicting, summarizing etc. Students learn through interactive read aloud and guided reading of leveled texts.
Vocabulary
Students learn new vocabulary in context. The vocabulary journal we use in our tutoring sessions will help your children not only read the new words, but also use the new words on their own.
Fluency
Fluency is about reading with intonation and expressions. Students improve fluency through reading poetry and reader's theater scripts.
ONE HOUR READING SESSION
1. Warm Up (5-10 minutes):
*Re-read and review homework passages
*Talk about what student has read since we were last together
2. New Reading (25-30 minutes):
This time is divided into three sections: before, during, and after reading
*Before reading activities might include: teacher modeling, building background, or introducing new vocabulary words
*During reading, the student reads new material aloud and I assist when needed by doing things such as providing help with reading new words or asking questions to check comprehension
*After reading, the student and I may discuss the passage read, talk about how well he or she understood the passage, or review a comprehension strategy
3. Word Study (10 minutes):
*Word Study is similar to phonics or spelling instruction, but word sorts are used to study patterns and structures within words. This is very hands-on (and fun) learning for the student!
*The word patterns/structures that the student studies are chosen based on the needs of your child.
4. Reading to Student (10 minutes):
*This is when I get to read to your child. No matter how old, research shows that students benefit from being read to.
*During this time, I will model things such as reading with fluency, word attack strategies, comprehension strategies, fix up strategies and how much fun reading can really be.
Tutoring sessions are offered both in person and online. Online classes are delivered through Zoom Video Conference which is an app you can use on any of your devices for free. In online Zoom class, both teacher and students can annotate on shared screen and whiteboard.
Teacher-made videos will be sent for reviewing after each session.
