Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Reading fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Fluency includes things like:
reading at a good pace- not too fast and not too slow
using punctuation to tell your voice when to stop, slow down, or raise up (like at the end of a question)
Reading in phrases and reading dialogues
reading with expression, using emotions
reading accurately and smoothly
To develop fluency, we practice reading out aloud interesting books and poems.
<Elephant and Piggie book> By Mo Willems
<Where the Sidewalk Ends> by Shel Silverstein
<Yo! Yes?> by Chris Raschka
Reader's theater is also a great resource for practicing fluency.
We can even write our own scripts of the book we love and practice reading it out aloud together.
