This project involved creating a tilt gage app with an enabled clock interface designed to remind wheelchair users to periodically tilt their chairs for pressure relief. For individuals with limited mobility who remain seated for extended periods, regular repositioning can help redistribute pressure and reduce the risk of pressure injuries. The app uses a phone's orientation sensor to determine whether the device has reached a 35° tilt threshold, displaying either "Tilted" or "Not Tilted" depending on the measured angle. A timer provides periodic reminders to reposition. For testing purposes, I set the reminder interval to 5 seconds to make troubleshooting easier and quickly evaluate the app's functionality. A fully developed version would use clinically appropriate reminder intervals and validated wheelchair tilt measurements.
The app was creating using MIT App Inventor, incorporating the orientation sensor built into a phone, a Clock component, and a visual interface displaying the user's current tilt status. I used "when Orientatin changed" event blocks to continuously monitor the phone's orientation and if/then/else conditional statements to determine whether the measured angle met the 35° threshold. Depending on the sensor reading, the app updated the displayed text to indicate whether the user had tilted sufficiently according to the prototype's programmed threshold. A Clock component was programmed to trigger reminders every five seconds if tilt was measured to be "Not Tilted" (<35 degrees).
Using collected orientation sensor data from phone sensors
Developing if/then/else statements to compare sensor readings against a 35° threshold and update the displayed tilt status
Using "when changed" event conditions to automatically update the app in response to changes in device orientation
Troubleshooting via disabling and enabling certain blocks of code
Blocks of code used to code buttons to start clock timer reminder and determine tilt.
