This project involved creating is an accessible app designed to guide users through the process of safely cleaning and bandaging a minor wound. Proper wound care is important for preventing infection, protecting injured skin, and promoting healing. However, individuals with cognitive impairments, such as dementia, traumatic brain injuries, developmental disabilities, or memory and attention difficulties, may struggle to remember or correctly sequence the steps involved in applying a bandage. This app breaks the process into 8 simple, manageable steps, providing visual instructions and text-to-speech audio cues to help users complete each task. By allowing users to move forward, go backward, repeat instructions, or restart the process, the app accommodates different learning speeds and cognitive abilities to reduce reliance on caregivers.
The aid app was developed using MIT App Inventor. 8 PNG images were incorporated to visually demonstrate each step, while the TextToSpeech component providing corresponding verbal instructions. Global variable blocks and lists were used to store the step number, images, titles, and instructions, allowing the app to function as a gallery-style prompting system that cycles through each step. A procedure block was created to automatically update the displayed image, step label, step number, and spoken instructions based on the current step. Button-click event blocks allow users to navigate forward or backward through the sequence or restart the activity. Conditional statements were also used to prevent users from advancing beyond the final step or returning before the first step.
Learning to organize images, text, and navigation buttons into a simple, accessible interface
Implementing conditional statements and button-click events to control step progression, update displayed information, and prevent navigation errors
Integrating visual prompts and text-to-speech instructions within a procedure block for ease of coding calls
Troubleshooting block connections, verifying image filenames and list indices, and testing the application's navigation and audio functions
Blocks of code used to code buttons to code next/back buttons and step image, label, and instruction rotations.
