This course has been available to students for over 50 years in our district. Some of the initial framework has been done for our program. Below there are a few consideration for teachers in this program and for teachers looking to start a program. If a program is starting, there will be details that will need to be addressed that are not mentioned here.
Building a program will need finial resources, space, teaching positions and a clear idea of a wholistic program that a doublebass program can be a component of.
The district this program is designed for has a fully funded music program with most of the needed resources. The student population that this doublebass program pulls from has over two dozen schools and the coordination of recruitment and a schedule for lessons is a monumental task to complete. Here are some of the yearly considerations.
All Year
Raise the Doublebass profile: This can be done throughout the year by presenting doublebass in concert, class demonstrations, playing videos and explaining the double basses role in different groups in elementary classes
Autumn
Organize course materials
Submit course overview to administration
Prepare student course selection materials for calendar
Winter
Oversee course selection options with music students
Raise the profile of the course to registers and school councillors
Spring:
Preliminary student recruitment
Organize teaching materials
Prepare a schedule
