This doublebass instruction is divided into four discrete skill levels. The levels are interrelated, sequenced and rely on a spiral design for the individual curriculum level and for the program as a whole. Each skill level is a comprehensive curricula that fosters skill development leading to value and transfer at each level before readying the student for the next instruction skill level.
The overall components of the course share the same root criteria. The scope and sequence of the skill acquisition repeats the initial skill development and increases the intensity and the nuance of the repertoire over time.
The executive skills and knowledge taught and assessed in each level are:
Fundamental Skills
Musical Criteria
Rhythm
Tone Quality
Accuracy of Notes
Accuracy of Bowing
Intonation
Expression
Each of these executive skill and knowledge areas can be assessed using a summative baseline, developing, proficient and advanced rubric at desired intervals. For informal formative assessments, a mnemonic assessment is a fun way for students to be engaged in their own reflection of progress. Students will be encouraged to create a portfolio of their playing that will contextualize their progress of the short term and long term.
