Jeremiah 1:4-5,17-19 - God calls Jeremiah and tells him that God protects him
1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13 - Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts with love as described
Luke 4:21-30 - Jesus tells the Jews that the gentiles will also be saved
He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”
And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?”
He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’”
And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
But he passed through the midst of them and went away.
Zarephath
A city in Phoenicia (today's Lebanon)
Sidon
A city in Lebanon
A place for prayer and study of scripture. In the time of Jesus, this is open to all Jews where one (who is not a priest) can read the scripture to the assembly. This is different from the temple (where the Jews offered sacrifices).
Jeremiah
Jeremiah was born, perhaps about 650 B.C., of a priestly family from the village of Anathoth, two and a half miles northeast of Jerusalem.
God called him to prophesy under the trying circumstances of the final days of the kingdom of Judah.
Corinthians
People who lived in Corinth, located in south-central Greece.
Paul’s first letter to the church of Corinth provides us with a fuller insight into the life of an early Christian community of the first generation than any other book of the New Testament. More information.
He was a physician. He was a disciple of St Paul.
He wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts (or Acts of the Apostles).
