Mentors will explore the mentee's technology fields of interest with their mentee.
Mentors and mentees will look at how the skills promoted by the arts are important to successful careers in technology.
Discuss with your mentee what technologies they have used or studied in school, at home or in other activities.
Ask your mentee if they can think of examples of when technology has made things more complicated?
Share your experience about the changes in technology.
Did they have an interesting technology project that integrated some of the skills promoted by the art?
Did they get excited or feel a passion about any of these technology areas or skills?
Together, read the US News & World Report published article that identified technology as the number one job prospect of 2022.
Talk to your mentee about what the trends might mean.
Ask your mentee whether they think it will stay the same next year? Why?
Scroll down and click on “Browse complete rankings” and view the best technology jobs.
Are there other tech jobs your mentee is interested in?
From the list below of skills promoted by the arts, or others the mentor or mentee would like to add, discuss which skills the mentee has some proficiency in and which they need to build. Each skill contains a link to a website that provides ideas on how to build these skills. If you have completed some of the other STEM lessons in this toolkit, choose different skills from the list below than you have worked on previously as all these skills are important in STEM careers.
Have the mentee choose 2 or 3 technology careers that they are interested in learning more about. Explore these or similar technology careers of interest at Indeed and discuss aspects of and interest in these careers.
Next, choose 1 or 2 skills promoted by the arts that you both identified as skills the mentee needs to build for a technology career. Discuss how applying these skills to the technology field of interest would enhance the mentee’s opportunities and work in these technology careers.
Using the arts promoted skills building websites provided, plan some future practice sessions to build or enhance the skills identified to support the mentees interest in technology careers.
In future sessions, continue to explore technology careers of interest to the mentees using the Indeed website, or websites for job shadowing, internships, etc.
