Mentors will explore the math fields of interest with their mentee.
Mentors and mentees will look at how the skills promoted by the arts are important to successful careers in math.
The common question kids often have with math is “Why do I have to learn this stuff? When will I ever use it again?
Share how math impacts your career and life.
Ask your mentee what math courses they have taken in school.
Are there other areas they used interesting math at home, in hobbies, or in other activities?
Did they have a project that required math that they found interesting? What other skills were used?
Did they get excited or feel a passion about any of these math areas or skills?
Look at some websites with fun and interesting math games and projects such as However, Mathematics, Pinterest, Mashupmath, or find other interesting math websites.
Which projects or games interest your mentee?
Why?
Discuss what math areas seem to be of most interest to the mentee.
From the list below of skills promoted by the arts, or others the mentor or mentee would like to add, discuss which skills the mentee has some proficiency in and which they need to build. Each skill contains a link to a website that provides ideas on how to build these skills. If you have completed some of the other STEM lessons in this toolkit, choose different skills from the list below than you have worked on previously as all these skills are important in STEM careers.
Have the mentee choose 2 or 3 math careers that they are interested in learning more about. Explore math careers including skills needed at We Use Math, or Careers for Math Majors.
Next, choose 1 or 2 skills promoted by the arts that you discussed previously and think about how applying these skills to the math field of interest would enhance the mentee’s opportunities and work in their math careers of interest.
Using the arts promoted skills building websites provided, plan some future practice sessions to build or enhance these skills in the mentee
In future sessions, continue to explore math careers of interest to the mentee using at We Use Math or Careers for Math Majors, or websites for job shadowing, internships, etc.
