Mentors will explore the science fields of interest with their mentee
Mentors and mentees will look at how the skills promoted by the arts are important to successful careers in the science.
Discuss with your mentee the science they have studied in school.
What were their favorite science classes?
Are there other science areas your mentee has found interesting in hobbies or other activities?
Did they have an interesting science project that used science/art skills integration?
What skills were used?
Do some fun science projects together with your mentee by visiting the Science Kids/ Website or Makerspaces.com.
Which projects does the mentee find most interesting? Why?
Do these projects suggest a science field the mentee might be interested in as a career?
From the list below of skills promoted by the arts, or others the mentor or mentee would like to add, discuss which skills the mentee has some proficiency in and which they need to build. Each skill contains a link to a website that provides ideas on how to build these skills. If you have completed some of the other STEM lessons in this toolkit, choose different skills from the list below than you have worked on previously as all these skills are important in STEM careers.
Have the mentee choose 2 or 3 science careers that they are interested in learning more about. Explore these or similar science careers of interest at Science Buddies. Use the filter to view Life and/or Physical Science careers.
Next, choose 1 or 2 skills promoted by the arts that you discussed previously and talk about how applying these skills to the science field of interest would enhance the mentee’s opportunities and work in their science careers of interest.
Using the arts-promoted skills-building websites provided, plan some future practice sessions to build or enhance the skills identified to support the mentee's interest in science careers.
In future sessions, continue to explore science careers of interest to the mentees using Science Buddies, , or websites for job shadowing, internships, etc.
