There are two great websites you can use that provide a wealth of information and the opportunity to explore STEAM majors and careers together with real-world data.
With your mentee, you can visit these websites, search for careers of interest, and discuss what you find.
CollegeMajors101.com is a website where you can research a variety of majors available including being able to watch videos and see what the job functions are in that major. This could also be used after an experience. Did you and your mentee visit a community garden or a farmer’s market? Check out the major on Organic and Urban Farming, sometimes just helping your mentee realize how people get to do what they do could be a spark. Perhaps you were at the park playing basketball, did you know you could major in Athletic Training? Did you and your mentee go to a baseball game? Does your mentee love the atmosphere of the park? Perhaps they could be an architect and design stadiums for Major League Baseball. Please keep in mind that while these are great resources, this website is funded by schools featured on the site, so the schools listed should not be considered the only schools to find the academic programs they’re interested in.
The Bureau of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook is an online resource where you and your mentee can search careers by interest and learn facts such as what the position does, what the work environment is like, how to get into the field, what the pay scale is, and what the outlook for future growth is like.
Share about Your Career and Compare it with the Bureau’s Handbook
What your work environment is like? How it is the same or different from what was described?
How your position is different or the same compared to what they say the position does?
How you got into your position—is it the same or different from how they suggest you get there?
Without being specific, how the pay in your organization is determined?
What you considered doing that was similar? Or what you did do before if you changed careers?
What professional associations do you belong to and why?
