Industry 4.0 or smart industry is the new shift in the manufacturing industry. It includes internet of things, embedded systems, cloud computing and cyber physical systems. With these technologies, manufacturing companies will be able to gather and analyze data in order to enable faster, flexible and more efficient processes and producing higher-quality goods [1]. However, Dutch small and medium sized manufacturing companies are leaking behind in this new shift. Big enterprises are able to invest in advanced solutions. Small and medium companies do not have such budgets to spent on these solutions. They would like to experiment with simple tools to collect data and optimize their production process or quality of the product [2].
The aim of this project is to develop methods and tools based on smart industry technologies that support medium and small sized companies in collecting data and optimizing their process and product. Therefore, we want to develop a monitoring system which can easily integrate and analyze multiple source systems.
At the moment, we are in the executing phase of this project. We interviewed companies like Pentas, EuroMouldings, PM Bearings, Thales and Nijhuis Industries to gain an understanding about the data sources and storage. We discovered they are all facing similar data acquisition and storage problems. Resulting in a need for a standardized affordable IoT framework. An allocated student group (SSS) are now investigating several frameworks and are trying to set up a data acquisition solution within the companies Pentas and EuroMouldings.
Furthermore, another group of students did a project (SSS) for PM Bearings. They created a device to test ground cables. This device documents all the test data in order to prove that cables are tested. All tests are saved on a central server and are accessible from all over the world.
