Nobody can say Springfield doesn't get big winds after today, with good wind all day and gusts around 30kph.
Thanks to Bob for his scoring today.

You ask for wind, you got it today and it was blustery westerlies causing a few nose dives and other calamities, but otherwise a clear cool day.
Great performance from Ian Gordon, with Gary and Murray in a close chase behind him, and there were 8 skippers that had at least 1 win, if my count is right.
Many thanks to Mike as RO for a good part of the day, then David taking over, and Bob scoring all finishes.

Another great time spent sailing on a sunny Springfield winter's day. Only light to variable winds, but enough breeze to get in 10 races.
Thanks to Mike Jefferys, Ian Ashe, and Bob Bray for volunteering with the race duties and scoring. Unfortunately, a rudder problem ruined Doug's day.
Today we had wind, strong enough to snap one forestay, and split another skippers rudder, and caused a number of somersaults on the downwind runs. We could have used B sails today. Anyway, it was a sunny, clear, blustery day, so it's all good.
Thanks to Ian Ashe for dropping by to do the honours as RO and Scorer, and well done Gary for a great result. Next placings were Ian Robertson and Ian Gordon.
Well after about 3 weeks of great sailing winds today looked set to continue the trend with a nice South Westerly breeze blowing in the morning which we all hoped would fill in after lunch. We had our BBQ lunch cooked by Ian A, Ian G and Andrew. Almost as soon as we put our boats on thwater to start racing the weather gods forwned on us and slowly the breeze abated to nothing as the day progressed. As a result we only completed 6 races with Race 7 being abondoned whilst John was finally leading one. We decided to call it a day as the breeze had completely disappeared. Thanks to Ian Ashe for doing the RO job and Bob for recording the finishes. Congratulations to todays place getters Murray, Ian R and Gary. Also welcome back to Ian G from his caravan holiday.
What a great day for sailing. Great breeze from the WSW all day. Thanks to Bob and Warner for recording the finishes. Well done to all who sailed today. Congrats To Ian R, Murray W and John H for the placings today. Another round of close scores.
IOM Handicap Round 2
Saturday 17th May 2025
The cancelation of Redlands DF95 interclub due to the possibility of inclement weather was their loss and our gain, as some of those members intending to race came to Springfield.
One of those "Ian Ashe" who we are always grateful for took on the role of RO and scorer. A necessary job which without, our event would not run as smooth. Thanks Ian.
As for the others, myself included, I am sure had a great day mingling with friends. Not a drop of rain was had, and there was enough wind to get our boats moving and provide close competition, also flat water. Just how I like it.
Thanks John H (our president) who regularly and un-selfishly takes on the role of organization of the day, cleaning the lake of weed and many other roles. Then how can we forget those sausages and onions cooked perfectly by Andrew and his team. Other helpers always available and appreciated.
Skippers in attendance at the starting line today numbered 13, a great roll up for the IOM Handicap - Round 2.
What more can I say:
Murray Walker with the green machine took out First place with 3 wins. Well done Murray.
Followed by myself "Gary Earl", ever consistent with one win , Second place.
Ian Robertson, consistent also and always there, only one point behind for Third place.
Review the score card and take note of the place getters and how spread out they were. A great effort by all.
Passing Park/Lake walkers would have see a well behaved friendly bunch of guys. What a great look for our club.
Cheers Gary.

Once there was weed, now it's gone Once there was wind, but not much today.
Thanks Ian Ashe for doing the RO duties today, and Ian Lobley for scoring.

Good wind from the east/south east, with variations in strength., but sailed one course all day.
Thanks to Ian Ashe as RO, and Mark Jents for calling finishes.

Well, another fantastic day at Springfield Lakes Racing, the IOM scratch. After a very tasty sausage sizzle, racing got underway. We had seven boats with 14 races. The breeze as usual came from all different directions during the day with a very tightly contested fleet. Once again a big thank you to Ian Ash and Bob Bray for doing the PRO & scoring also Ian Gordon andhelpers with the barbecue.

6 starters today including a newest member Rob Wilson. A few over-eager starters crossed the line early, but as Murray often says , ” if you are not over the line at least twice, you are not trying hard enough”.
A couple of course changes due to altering winds, and some very slow moments, but not a bad day overall.
The weed barrier is working very well, and we ushered a bit more behind the barrier before starting the racing.
Results:
1st Ian Gordon – 10.
2nd Ian Robertson – 13
3rd Mark Jents - 14

Well, what a day at the lake! To welcome back the IOM fleet from a long enforced break the lake put on a typical display of variable winds SE, E, NW, 5knts gusting to 12knts all at the same time!! 6 sailors took on the challenge with 11 races completed all superbly run by the RO Ian Ashe.
There were 5 separate winners with Mark Jents taking gold, Ian Robertson silver and Doug Wells bronze. Well done.
Big thanks to Bob Bray who scored and handicapped us.
IOM Handicap - Round 1
Saturday 20th January 2024
Today was the first race for the IOM’s for 2024 and marks the beginning of the handicap system for the year. We had 10 boats (excellent rollup for IOM’s) on the lake which made for close competition and no crowding except for the marks at times, all races having 2 laps.
We also had no breakdowns and no one putting their boat in the water without turning it on so the year is off to a good start.
It started with the typical Springfield weather of no wind, not even enough to blow out a birthday candle. But it did increase to about 3-4knots as the day progressed which made for a lot more competitive and pleasant sailing not to mention that it also cooled us down a little. The first race was so lacking in wind we could have gone and had a coffee waiting for the boats to round the first mark.
Thanks goes to Ian Ashe for being our PRO and Bob and Ian W for doing the recording of results. Thanks also to Ian G and his helpers for the BBQ.
Congratulations goes to Mark Jents for winning the day with Ian G coming second and then Gary Earl with 1 point more making a very close third. Fourth place was shared by 3 sailors which indicates how close the competition was.
Looking forward to the next event.
Cheers

IOM Scratch - Round 7
Saturday 9th December 2023
What a year!
Today was the final day of competitive sailing for the year.
Round 7 of the IOM Scratch Championship.
The wind was typical of the lake varying in strength and direction, but primarily between North and East.
Nine boats started the day, and all successfully completed the day, with a couple of minor hiccups.
Thanks to Ian Ashe for taking control and doing the RO job, keeping all in line, many thanks Ian, your effort is greatly appreciated.
Thanks also to Bob Bray and Shelley Heard for recording the results, again greatly appreciated.
Without these members assisting we would struggle to complete these days.
At the end of the day, 11 races completed, 4 different race winners.
Congratulations to Ian Robertson in first place with 4 race wins, John Heard second place with 4 race wins and Ian Gordon in third place with one race win,
All that remains now is our end of year presentation day and Christmas lunch next Saturday.
Who will be crowned the winners of each section and who will be the Class Champions.
All will be revealed next Saturday at 11.30am.
See you there

IOM Handicap - Round 7
Saturday 2nd December 2023
A very pleasant day on the lake today, rain was expected but didn't come, the wind about 7-9 knots with gusts just enough to bury the nose your boat unexpectedly. I would say the best day yet that I have had to sailed IOM.
Great course, thanks Ian and John, some were having trouble judging the distance of the far white buoy, great for us with new glasses. Races were started from buoy 1 and a stick on the bank, I don't think I heard anyone called for being OCS and continuing up to the white buoy at the far NW end. Port rounding, and back to 1 & 2, port rounding at the bottom end, - 2 laps. Handicaps ranging from 0s to 60s.
Probably the longest legs I have sailed with my Alioth. I had fun, as I am sure all did as well.
Hamish retired early, think it was a breakdown and he said he had a tennis appointment (he has to get his priorities right), I retired early with a breakdown as well, bad timing as I was thinking today was my day, although I always thing that, it will be soon I promise.
With 9 boats on the water, congratulations to Ian Robertson -18 points, John Heard - 23 points, Andrew Sexton- 25 points. And as mentioned before, thanks to :-
Ian Ash - PRO, John Heard - coffee and handicapper (why am I on 50 John, Andrew said I should be on -20 with 6 races in last place 🙂) and Bob Bray for documenting the scores.

Well what a day at Springfield today, windy for most of the day between 4 and 7 knots which was a little less than predicted by willy weather. We all turned up with our A rigs and at times needed our B rigs but that would have been for only part of the race. Some boats were motoring and we wondered if they had a “James Bond V8” that popped out under the stern to make them go so fast. All up it was a great day for everybody with some very close finishing and at times the difference was only a whisker.
The downside was buoy number three which seemed to have 3 or 4 wind changes within 3 or so meters or it was like that for me. Buoy number 4 or 5 was the next challenge , 4 being closer to the finish but 5 offering a better wind position to finish. Which was better was a guess.
When we look at the final result we fitted in 14 races with every boat having 2 or more wins. Ken S was the only exception but he had rudder problems and had to retire part way through although he did get a 2nd and a 3rd early in the day.
Congratulations to Ian R who won the day with Gary P coming a close second and John H coming third. Thanks goes to Ian Ashe and John Heard for being our PRO and Bob B and Ian L for recording the results and determining changes to the handicaps. I must also thank Ian A for his racing tips and tuning my boat. It now goes a lot faster.
One more round to go in the IOM handicap and hopefully it will be just as good as today.
Cheers

IOM Handicap - Round 5
Saturday 23rd Sept 2023
Today we had 9 boats competing in our IOM handicap round 5. Handicap starts promotes a spread out start and consequently a spread out fleet so a lot of sailing in clear wind is possible, and that is how it was today.
The weather forecast was for 9 knots from mid-morning through to 2.30 when racing was scheduled to finish and for once it was pretty much spot on correct. We did at times have some lighter breezes but not much below 4-5 knots. This made for a lot of fast sailing both upwind and down wind with some boats getting close to nose diving on the down wind leg. It also enabled us to have two lap races.
A thankyou goes to Murray for being the PRO, Bob and Shelly for recording the finish places and David for recording the results on the lap top.
Well done to John Heard (28 points) who won the day with Andrew Sexton and Gary Earl close behind with 30 points each.
When you look at the results almost every contender won at least one race during the day which says a lot for our handicap system. For us not so good sailors the handicap system sometimes works in our favour and for me it was today. All in all it makes for a most enjoyable day and really isn’t being able to sail with people who have the same attitude and values the best thing. Whether you come first or last sailing is the winner.
Cheers

A good turn out with 12 boats on the water for today's Round 5 of the IOM Scratch series.
We had some reasonable winds for the first half of the day but they slowly dropped out. Nevertheless we got 10 races in with plenty of hot competition.
Thanks as always to Ian Ashe for doing a great job as Pro for the day, to David B for pulling the scores together, and all other helpers, bringers of equipment, etc. Congrats to the podium, with Murray Walker out in front on 19 points with Ian Gordon in second and Mark Jents in third.

IOM Handicap - Round 3
Saturday 15th July 2023
Light and variable to lighter and more variable was the order of the day, but the weather was great and we had 8 boats on the water, so all was well.
After 4 races we opted for a short break during which time one boat took off in an unexpected gust into the lily-pads while a cup of tea was being poured, (bad decision).
So while the rescue was in progress, a decision was made to ‘call it a day’ at 4 races as the wind had packed up and left.
Thanks to Ian Watson and Bob Bray who again did scoring across the line.

IOM Scratch - Round 4
Saturday 17th June 2023
My first race today at Springfield Lakes in the IOM class and first time on the water with my “3d printed Alioth”. I was happy with how it performed but it will require some tuning to bring it up to speed of the experienced skippers in the field.
Murray Walker took out first place with his fresh off the boat and spanking new K2, which looked as good as it went. Ian Gordon followed close behind as did Doug Wells for the other place getters. 10 races saw 6 skippers take out first place showing how tight the competition was.
Nobody could fault the conditions that were handed to us for the event, nice sunshine, not hot, with sufficient breeze to keep the boats moving most of the time.
Doug Wells and Ian Gordon cooked the BBQ which was up to its usual great standard.
Ian Ashe acted as PRO with his experienced and fair values keeping a keen eye over a field of well-behaved skippers.
Thanks to the scorers Ian Watson and Bob Bray, for being there and helping with a job that required 100% attention all day. And John Heard for getting the event started (and providing the great coffee urn) and Ian Lobley for calculating the results.
I had fun today as I am sure everyone did. I am looking forward to the next.

IOM Handicap - Round 2
Saturday 13th May 2023
We had eight boats on the water today for Round 2 of the IOM Club Handicap series. Glorious autumn weather and variable but solid winds made for some interesting and tight racing. With as many different designs as there were skippers and with a considerable age difference in the designs, this is what handicap racing is made for.
We had 12 races over the afternoon with five different sailors scoring wins. Congrats to the podium - John Hockings, Ian Robertson and Gary Pryor.
Special thanks to Race Officer Ian Ashe, to Bob Bray and Ian Watson for keeping results, and to David Black for the computer scoring.

IOM Scratch - Round 3
Saturday 6th May 2023
On a beautiful Autumn day, what could be better than fresh air and an IOM to race with. Anyway, the winds were very light but manageable so 8 boats started the first couple of races between the buoys 1 an2 to make a long first leg, and sort out the fleet. After that the start was from the flags with occasional reversing as the wind changed.
Five skippers had one or more wins, so there was some close racing, and most had at least one second place.
Thanks to Ian Ashe for running the event for us, and Shelley Heard and Bob Bray for recording the finishes, and David Black for the computer scoring.
1st: Ian Gordon was the most consistent won and the day on 17.
2nd: Ian Robertson on 18
3rd Murray Walker on 26

A beautiful summers day at the lake today, temp in the mid 30’s with light variable winds sometimes from the southwest and sometimes from the southeast. After a couple of course reversals it settled in from the southeast but with varying strength, so it was hard to pick the best side of the course to sail.
A couple of mishaps and boat problems but generally a good day’s sailing.
Thanks to Ian A and David B for their assistance in running and scoring the day.
Congratulations to the place getters.
