Thanks to all who sailed today. It was the final round of the 2025 club championships.
A good turn out with 11 boats but unfortunately Marty discovered a major crack in his hull that flooded his electrics and put him out for the day.
Thanks for Mike for starting the day as RO and Marty for filling in for Mike when he had to leave early. Claims he had to pick his sister in law up from the train station, pretty poor excuse Mike, get your priorities right.
Thankfully the weather gods smiled on us and the predicted catostrophic storm was a fizzer, just a little light rain for 20 mins.
Congratulations to the placegetters today Ian R 1st, John 2nd, Ian A 3rd.
See you all at the presentation day on the 13th Dec.

The usual variable winds today with a number of course changes due to the wind swinging from the South West to the South East and back, and a couple of figure 8 races thrown in to make things interesting. John was the most consistent with lots of 1st and 2nd places, so well done John, followed by Ken and a late charge by Bruce to round out the 3 places.
Well what a day. The morning was looking great with the lake clear of weed and a gentle S/E breeze. But then around 10.30 the wind hit with a vengeance. Unfortunately the wind was gusting so strong that the weed trapped behind the rope was able to escape over the top. We made the decision to lift the rope to release all the weed onto the course hoping that the wind would clear it away by the time we had cooked the BBQ and had time to eat it. The weather gods looked down on us and cooperated clearing the weed in time for racing to start. A good days sailing was had even if we did get some small patches of weed floating across the course. Eight races were completed after a slightly delayed start. Even the light showers didn't dampen the enthusiasm.
Well done to the placegetters and thanks to all those who stood down to take their turn at RO duties. Also to new member Scott for assisting with recording the finishes.
See you all at the lake.
John
What a great day for sailing . A excellent BBQ lunch followed by some exciting sailing. A big thankyou to the cooks. A very consistent breeze from the east with an swing to the south east. Twelve races completed before the rain called a halt to proceedings. Thankyou to all sailors for stepping down in one race to do the RO duties, and Ian Ashe did two turns. Well done to all. Congratulations to the place getters and congratulations to all the skippers as the racing went off without a hitch with any penalties being done without arguments. It was also good to see Tony come down to the lake with his grandson to pay us a visit following the recent death of his wife.

DF95 Scratch Round 1
Our first DF95 Scratch race for this year was superb. Wind was around 8-10 knots with gusts to 12-14knots. The weed was down the bottom of the lake and not anywhere to be seen on our course. To top it off we had a fleet of 14 boats a great turnout for the club.
Although the start to the day was delayed by a late BBQ due to someone else wanting the use one of the BBQ plate we did manage to make up for it with a lot of speed sailing nose diving and boats laying off on their side as they tried to sail upwind. Was this really Springfield L:askes or somewhere else.
Having 14 boats on the lake in 10 knots of breeze made the starts a little tense but not many over the line calls . We had decided to share the RO job around which allowed everybody to get in a sail with the RO not sailing for 1 race. Their score was adjusted for their contribution for the day. We should do this more often.
Congratulations goes to Ian Ashe (2 wins and 3 seconds) ,Bruce Mclaren (4 wins and 1 second) and Ian Lobley (1 win and 1 second). Great to see Ian L race again as I think it has been a long time since his last race. To those 3 winners congratulations but just remember that there are another 11 sailors that are out to take your place on the winners stand.
At the end of the day winning is nice but the real reason we had 14 sailors today was the club atmosphere and the fact that the racing is for fun and coming first, but mostly the former.
We had a good day with fun and competition but enjoyable. Where else can you do that.
Cheers

DF95 Handicap Round 5
What a great day for sailing at the lake. Pity I forgot how to sail!
A virtually weed free day.
Good wind all day, with pretty consistent direction with just enough shifts to keep you on your toes.
Well done to the place getters on the day. Murray Walker, Ken Godwin and Ian Ashe.
Thanks to all who helped with the scoring and Andrew for the Handicapping.

DF95 Scratch Round 4
Another light day at Springfield or should I say a light light light day. The wind only got to about 3 knots for a very short time and spent most of the time either non existent or so light that only the best skipper at guessing where it was coming from had an advantage.
We started the day with 6 skippers which is the minimum we need for the races to be counted as an event. And to add to the challenge, as the day progressed the weed moved across the lake so the start line was changed to between the far flag and the real estate agent’s office . The weed also moved up and down the lake making it more challenging. I am sure not one skipper managed to miss having weed on his keel at some time during the day.
On a brighter note, we were able to sail and did fairly well considering the weed and lack of wind.
Congratulations to Ian Ashe and Ken Goodwin who tied for first place, with Ken winning on a count-back, and Ken Swalwell who managed third place.
Any day you can sail has to be a good day.
Cheers, Andrew Sexton

DF95 Scratch Round 3
Nine lucky sailors raced their DF95s today. There was no weed to worry about. The wind was moderate and steady.
Well the wind is never steady, but it was consistent enough that we sailed the same course for all 11 races.
The Race Officer duties were shared by all and 5 skippers enjoyed a first place in at least one race.
The NW winds kept us unusually warm but there was plenty of shade available.
Congratulations to Marty, Ian Gordon and Ian Ashe for their first three places, and thanks to the BBQ boys, delicious.!

DF95 Handicap Round 3
The day started with everyone enjoying a delicious BBQ.
The wind direction remained fairly consistent with the wind the usual variable strength.
Not too much weed was experienced due to the effectiveness of the weed barrier.
A couple of tangles between boats delayed starts but 10 races were still completed in time.
Congratulations to the place getters, Ian Ashe, Bruce McLaren and Ian Robertson.
Thanks also to Mark Jents for taking over RO duty after retiring from racing.

DF95 Handicap Round 2
Today was our first day of DF95 handicap racing since the lake was reopened. It was a day that according to the forecast was to be 4-5 knots, something we look forward to with anticipation. The day itself did not stick to the forecast and produced about 2-3 knots and it was not 3 knots very often. This made for slow racing and at times frustrated sailing but we look at that as a challenge although some have more descriptive words to describe the day.
We did manage to get 5 races in and did not go for a sixth when the weed floated across to the bank we launch from. We had already moved the course a couple of times to avoid the weed but no wind meant it did not move across the lake quickly. Just another challenge for our hearty sailors. I am sure just about everybody had weed on their keel at some time and if you didn’t then you should have.
Thanks goes to Rod M for being our scorer and RO. Congratulations to our winners Murray coming 1st, Ian Ashe with a second and Ken G coming in third. Well done to all of you but there are a few of us hot on your heels to get in front.
Pray that on Wednesday next when we have our DF95 match racing the weed will have cleared and the wind will be back. If you have not entered yet logon and enter.
See you on Wednesday.

Round 2 Scratch
Well, a fantastic day to be back at Springfield Lakes Radio Yacht Club for the DF 95 scratch.
The lake greeted us this morning with a gusty South Westerly wind, which at times felt like it was coming off the polar cap, and, no weed to speak of.
Ten sailors arrived to battle the elements. Ian Robertson was the only boat to be sporting a “B” rig which was a threat to us all as the breeze ranged up and down.
Everyone sailed well considering the trying conditions.
Thanks to all skippers who took their turn to PRO.
Thanks to Ian Gordon for lugging the tea, coffee and urn.
At the end of the day,
Gold went to Mark Jents
Silver went to Ian Ashe
Bronze went to David Black
Mark J
P.S. Don't forget to enter for the DF65 Match racing on Wednesday the 17/7/24.
Entry form on Match Racing page in the "Information" Tab.
Also next Saturday is DF65 Scratch racing, with a BBQ beforehand , so racing will start at 12.30 after the BBQ.

Round 1 Scratch
A typical HOT summer day (36-37 degrees) with very light and variable breeze was experienced by the fleet of 11 DF95s for the 1st round of the Scratch series.
A course reversal half way thru the day kept everyone on their toes.
The usual mishaps and dramas occured at mark roundings, but everyone carried out their penalties.
Thanks to Ian R (Pro) and Ian W and Ian L (Scoring).
There were 7 different winners from 8 races, creating some tight finishes with 3rd to 8th overall separated by just 3 points.
Congratulations to the place getters
1st Marty Wallace, 2nd Ian Ashe, 3rd Ken Godwin

Round 1 Handicap
The first round of DF95 Handicap racing took place at Springfield Lakes today. The weather was as forecast with 9knts of breeze with the usual fluky winds mostly form E/SE. Picturesque, overcast, not hot, making a very pleasant day for SLRYC's first event for the year.
19 boats took to the water, thanks Ian R for standing down and doing the PRO role with John H providing the welcome speech, working out the handicaps and making them clear for the starters.
As always, thanks to the ever-present Shelley H for documenting the places as they crossed over the line and Ian R, calling for her. A thankless job and we all appreciate Shelley's regular attendance and effort.
All skippers were well behaved with lots of communication and penalties being done. A little banter or could you call it sledging could be heard, all in good fun and taken in great spirit.
Disappointing for JH as I think he was the only Sailer that was forced out because of mechanical problems.
Dudley, Graham and Steve from Redlands, heard about "how good the sausages are on BBQ day" and fronted up for a day’s racing, all were made welcome, and we would love to see them attend more events at the lake.
Thanks to Ian G for providing the BBQ and his helpers making sure they were sufficiently cooked.
Lastly and rarely mentioned for his role in putting together the results of the day, Ian Robertson and of course another rarely mentioned Norm, our Treasurer for looking after the BBQ funds.
Final words, congratulations to our winners and place getters, Bruce McLaren on 43 points (first) Ian Ashe with 50 points (Second), Steve Elkinton, RRSC (Third) with 53 points.
This was the first event for the year, all skippers started on 30 seconds, a great start for the year and may the rest of our race days be as well organized and as much fan as this one.

Round 7 Scratch
We had some very enjoyable sailing at the lake this afternoon. Features of the day were the reasonably consistent wind that meant that we used the same course all afternoon and the very close racing down through the fleet.
The breeze was generally from the east at 5 to 10 knots with gusts up to 15 knots.
Close finishes kept scorer Shelly on her toes. In a couple of races, the first 5 or 6 boats finished in less than 5 seconds behind the winner.
Thanks to Shelly for scoring.
The well-deserved place getters were Murray, Bruce and John.

Round 7 Handicap
Another brilliant day at Springfield Lake. Sunny and hot, with the wind living up to Willyweather's forecast of 4-7 knots, and quite a few stronger gusts thrown in. These gusts meant some huge gains made by individuals at various times, but generally racing was fairly close. Of course those who could pick where the wind was (or perhaps more importantly where it was going to be) were the ones who did well.
The day began with a good field of 11 boats. From the 10 races there were 8 different winners, but the honours went to Ian R (1st) Bruce Mc (2nd on a countback) and Ken G (3rd). Interestingly at the start of the last race nearly half the field was off zero.
Having a gate at each end of the course should have made things simple but even some of the more experienced members (you know who you are) headed for the wrong buoy at times.
Thanks to Ian L and Ian R for both the BBQ and race management.
All in all a terrific day - good food, good sailing, and good company.
Where else would you want to be on a Saturday afternoon?

Round 6 Scratch
12 Entrants and 12 races to Round 6 of the Hcap series today.
Congratulations to the placgetters.
Mike Jefferys 1st on 16.9 points
Ian Ashe 2nd on 22.8 points
Doug Wells 3rd on 39.4 points
Ian Ash #18 today sailed absolutely brilliantly in Springfield Lakes DF95 Scratch Championship ….annoying everyone….
Ian excelled with his tactics, boat speed and generally being a good bloke. However, Ian had the problem of being too GOOD so members decided enough was enough ….. the call went out “cover Ian …stop Ian “
Whilst John #41 decided to act on the call and cover Ian Ashe this didn't work out as planned ….with Ian brilliantly sailing under his stern, straight through to leeward despite John best efforts…. And yes Ian won another race….
Thanks to Ian Robertson for the delicious BBQ (with tomatoes on the side). Everyone did there turn scoring,
Well done to Ian on a terrific days sailing

Round 5 Scratch
DF95 Scratch round 5 today with very pleasant conditions, 3-5 knts of wind but with a few holes and whirls in it. The racing was very competitive although I did notice John Heard well and truly streaking away from everyone a couple of times.
We began with a bbq as usual (thanks to the chefs (Ian L and Ian G) and those who set up the camp tables), Shelley kept an eye on everyone and got down all the results (thank you Shelley) with others chipping in as they crossed the line.
Congrats to John Heard who took the honours on the day ahead of Ian Ashe, and Ian Gordon who just pipped Ian Lobley for third.

Round 6 Handicap
As winter rolls on the breeze on the lake has been slowly building from ‘nothing’ to ‘quite a little bit’, making for an enjoyable day for the DF95 handicap racing. We were short of volunteers which lent a modicum of confusion to the recording of results but Ian R did a stirling job of multi-tasking pro duties and sailing his own boat - save for one hiccup in the reeds.
The bbq on the other hand went off without a hitch, thanks to Ian Watson and spouse for supplying and cheffing, with Ken S a fine kitchen hand, and Mark J and Ian Ashe for helping with the H/Cap board.
Congrats to the winners on the day, Ian R on 15, John Hockings on 19, and Mark Jents on 20, and we hope to see those of you who can make it to the inaugural DF65 casual racing morning next Wednesday.

Round 5 Handicap
A very pleasant Winters day saw the 5th round of the DF95 Handicap at Springfield Lakes today. A 5-7 Knot westerly breeze was appreciated by all starters lining up at the Eastern End of our lake. No false starts and very few penalties were called over the 9 races held.
Everyone appreciates how smoothly the event runs when you have a team of scorers, experienced skippers to set the course, and someone to work out the handicaps and mark them up on the board. Thanks team, Shelley, Gail, Paul, Ian A, John.
The Coffee is always a nice touch not found at any of the other events that I have been to. Thanks John
Well done Ian Ashe who ran away with first place on the day with 5 wins, followed not so closely by Ken S and Gary E.
Another fun day at Springfield.

Round 4 Scratch
IOM Scratch Races, Rnd 4, June 10 2023
A beautiful winter’s day at the lake is hard to beat, unless you also get some wind. It was a quiet, soft breeze when it came, but it then went again. Due to the conditions, we managed only 8 races, and had 5 different winners from the fleet of 14.
Anyway, we all had the same conditions to contend with, so it all comes down to concentration, and patience.
Ken Godwin had the lead for the whole day, with Murray close behind.
Thanks to Ian Watson , Paul Howard, Ian Ashe and Ian Lobley for helping to run the event.
Final scores:
1 Ken Godwin 15
2 Murray Walker 15
3 Ian Ashe 23

Round 3 Scratch
DF95 Scratch – Round3
14 races provided some good close racing for the 11 skippers that lined up for the 3rd round of the DF95 Scratch at Springfield Lakes today.
An outstanding performance from our podium placers, Ian Robertson, Ian Ash and John Heard and those that followed close behind. No excuse for not having a fun day today with an 8 knot breeze which was a little fluky, but made for good racing and results for those able to work their sails to get maximum performance.
Thanks again to the organizers and scorers - Shelley and Bob, and Marty for doing a short stint as PRO. Thanks also to those that shared the task of PRO. I am sure everyone had as much fun as I did and that they look forward to the next event as per the calendar.
See you on the water,
Gary E

Round 4 Handicap
Another perfect Autumn’s day on the water at Springfield Lakes today for the 4th round of the DF95 Handicap event.
A big thanks for Shelley who is always there to help with the scoring and Ian W for calling out the placings as they crossed the line. Andrew for being the PRO and of course John who updated the handicap board, bought the Coffee etc.
Then there was the BBQ. How good is that BBQ for $5 and $3 respectively, cooked to perfection as usual and just what’s required to get the day rolling. Thanks to Andrew and Ian G who cooked and procured the supplies.
As above, conditions perfect for our DF95 event, 1-4knots of wind, flat water with some small waves at times, very little delays at the start due to lack of wind. I don’t think anyone would be complaining about the weather that was provided or the days races as they progressed. Plenty of speed on the downward legs and not a lot of confusion/congregation at the first mark.
Last of all, congratulations to the place getters, Gary, Ken and Murray, and the 5 winners from the 9 races held spreading the 1st place around as a Handicap event should.

Round 2 Scratch
DF95 Scratch – Round 2
12 skippers arrived at Springfield lakes today to compete in the DF95 Scratch series. The day was overcast but very pleasant which made the provided BBQ and racing very enjoyable. Some of our members were missing in action, their absence was missed although the racing was still competitive and was enjoyed by all that participated. The forecast of 2-4 knots of wind was about right although the there were some lulls leaving the lake glassed out and providing some interesting reflections.
The results, the important part of this writeup. First Ian Gordon (9 points) Second Ken Godwin (17 points) followed up by Ian Lobley (23 points).
Congratulations to the podium placers, five skippers taking win from 8 races. That’s competitive.
Thanks to Ian Robertson (PRO) and Ian Watson for doing the scoring across the line and Mark and Ian for the BBQ.

Round 3 Handicap
WELL ! What can I say. They say a picture is worth a Thousand Words.
The day started out with quite a nice breeze in the morning then come race time\ someone turned the fan off.
A big thank you to Bob Bray for doing the job of PRO and recording the finishing boats. Also to Ian L and Ian R for doing the scoring and handicapping.
Congratulations to the place getters for the day. Those who did well really earned it, sailing in one of the worst sailing conditions seen at the lake.
Check the final scores on the spreadsheet, and starting handicaps for the next DF95 Handicap event….

Round 1 Scratch
Round 1 of the DF95 scratch events today with winds from a variety of directions a s usual, but the course stayed firm, starts from the western end of the course, buoys 4-6 heading east, around 3 and 2, then a gate between 4 and 5. It worked well, and though it made for a longer course, we managed to get in 11 races. A fleet of 13 starters, with one dropping out due to the fatigue effects of a recent bout of covid.
There were some very strong wind gusts with boats slightly out of control, but mostly favourable conditions.
Thanks to the volunteers that made the event possible. John Heard as RO, Shelley Heard and Ian Watson for starting and scoring.
Check out the scores. Congrats to all participants for a pleasant day of sailing.

Round 1 Handicap
Wow what a day to kick off the 2023 sailing season.
First round of the DF95 handicap .A BBQ, Good company and fairly good breezes with the usual 180 degree shift, and back again before the start.
Some very close finishes which kept the scorers on their toes. Only nine points separating first to seventh.
Congratulations to the place getters Ken, Murray and Bruce.
A big thanks to Doug for doing the PRO job for the day and those that did the handicapping.
