Well what a glorious day for sailing. Beautiful sunny day just touching 30degs. We had wind from the north, south east and west and all points in between. from zero to hero strength and everything in between. What a great turn out, 18 DF65 boats on the water sailing a different type of course with a gate either end to try and split the fleet at the roundings and it generally workied pretty well. Thanks to all that sailed for your excelleny sportsmanship, thanks to all who took a turn at doing the RO Duties and thatnks to Sel for doing the recording of the finishes. Well done to Gary, John and Ian for the top 3 placings today. Also thanks to Gary for doing the Barbie with help from Andrew, Ian A and there was probqably others whom I missed. Well done also to David and Jack sailing in there first event. David even managed to get a win in the final race, where as Jack needs to make some major adjustments to his boats rigging to get it competative. Well this was the final round of our DF65 championship and the winner is? You wil need to come to the presentation day to fing out the palcings for the year.
Today was Round 4 of our DF65 Handicap sailing. The day was varied with almost no wind and then good wind all of a sudden. As soon as we prepared for the next race the wind came in and then died but did become more consistent and stronger as the day progressed.
We had a fleet of 11 boats which is another good turnout for the club and managed to get 8 races in for the day with all being two laps. Close finishes were the order of the day for most races.
Congrats for the day go to Gary Earl coming in first followed by Ian Robertson and then Mike Jefferies. Things are pretty good when your discards are third places, so well done Gary. Ian Robbo had 2 firsts and 2 seconds so did a good job but not enough to topple the winner. Mike had a birthday recently and as his birthday present had to deal with a 90 second handicap to start with. He did manage to have a win in one race and that is not easy when you start with a big handicap and the rest of the fleet has just about completed their first lap when you start. Mike, your handicap suits you even if you are now an old salt like the rest of us.
The day was superb weatherwise with reasonable sun and warmth, no rain and wind.
Cheers
Andrew
Weather: Classic Queensland Chaos – Southerly at 15 km/h, 25°C, Cloudy with Rain and Sunshine
Ahoy, skippers and sailing fans!
Round 3 of the DF65 Handicap Series at Springfield Lakes served up the full buffet of weather today: chilly southerlies, a solid 15 km/h breeze, intermittent rain squalls, and surprise cameos by the sun. The water glistened, the air was electric, and so was the competition!
From the opening gun, Ian #97 set a blistering pace—taking line honours in Races 1, 2, 5, and 11 before hitting a DNS speedbump in Race 10. That late hiccup didn’t stop Ian from dominating the day.
Whispered rumors of new sailcloth and an extra Weet-Bix at breakfast may explain the speed!
Close on his stern was Julian #145, who showed remarkable consistency across the day—posting top-three finishes in seven of the thirteen races. A rock-solid performance, especially in the gusty stuff.
Meanwhile, Ian L in #147 gave us a study in resilience, rebounding from a mid-pack start to notch multiple podiums and a win in Race 8. A fine comeback!
Mike in #52 kept things spicy—with lots of discussion (whinging) to the RO about his 90 second handicap….despite this Mike sliced through the field in the earlier races and proving his boat is not just a light-air specialist.
John #56, while starting slow, found their groove later in the day, making serious moves up the fleet in the back half of the series.
Special mentions:
Gary #21's early form was electric, storming to a win in Race 3 and hanging tough in several races after.
Andrew #419 had a turbulent journey—at times brilliant, at times bewildering, but always entertaining.
Doug #74 clocked a podium and then went full stealth mode with back-to-back DNS. Hope all is well!
By Race 12, the clouds had scattered just enough to give us a rainbow finale. A fantastic day of tactical duels, gust management, and classic handicap thrills.
Thanks to the Race Officers who kept the day moving through squalls and scorecards, and hats off to every skipper who braved the conditions with a smile and a dry pair of socks (if they were lucky).
Same time next round
Stay salty,

DF65 Scratch - Round 2
Saturday 10 April, 2025
Thanks to Ian Ashe for doing the RO function today and Mark Jents with scoring and to all the skippers for a good day's sailing. The rain forecast was a bit out with the suggestion of 1-5 mm, but as Murray said, they probably meant per hour.
DF65 Handicap Round 1
Saturday 22nd February, 2025
Well what a day. Is was a great day to get back on the lake with plenty of breeze to keep us all on our toes.
13 boats, 10 Races completed.
Various skippers stood down to do RO duties and record the finish placegetters.
Unfortunately Bob had a rudder servo failure at the halfway mark, so he stepped in and did the RO duties for the rest of the day. Thanks Bob.
David also did the scoring on his laptop.
We only had a little bit of weed near the end of the day due to high wind gust getting some weed past the rope.
Hopefully we can keep the majority of the weed behind the ropes until a final solution can be found.

Very challenging winds today, but we managed to use the same course for all races. The lead changed several times during the day and the first 3 were not separated by much, and it’s good to see Bob in the winner’s circle again, as a result of his consistently good placings.

DF65 Handicap - Round 4
Saturday 28-9-2024
Well what a day! Whoever said that Springfield doesn't have any wind?
Unfortunately we had one boat withdraw before the racing started due to a servo failure.
Twelve boats prepared to battle the elements.
At the start of racing the wind was from the SSW at approx. 20kph. A couple of boats bravely started on A+ rig, most started on A rig and a couple tried out their B rig.
By the end of the day the wind was gusting in excess of 30 kph.
Ten races were completed with a number of different winners, there was also a few retirements by the end.
Well done to Marty for winning the day racing with B rig all day.
John in 2nd place started on B rig but had gear problems and had to change to A+ after a couple of races.
Ian Ashe, Mr. consistent in 3rd place using A rig.
Well sailed by all in some trying conditions with very few collisions so a good day was had by all.
Thanks also to Ian Lobley for help cooking the BBQ. Much appreciated

DF65 Handicap
Saturday 17th August 2024
Today we had our DF65 handicap race and what a day it was.
The wind started out with around 5 knots enough to give a decent speed and great for racing. The wind then changed to coming from all directions and gained strength to 5-7 knots. A bit more interesting for sailing. Then it changed again to be 7-10 knots with gusts that felt like 20 knots but were probably only 15 . It continued to go up and down throughout the day.
This made it very challenging for all us sailors as our boats spent a bit of time laying on their side sailing into the wind and when running downwind the frequent nose dive was the order of the day. Again a challenge that we could handle until it came time to tack, impossible and even a gybe to tack was not possible. This meant that even the best sailors lost their lead due to wind changing direction or coming in so strong they could not tack. A sigh of relief was heard when we decided to give it away after 8 races. The possibility of breakages was too great to continue but a great day was had by all. A total 14 of us turned up for the challenge.
Congratulations to Mike Jeffries who came in first, Ian Gordon second and Ian lobley a very, very close third. The PRO job was shared and the scores have been adjusted to give a fair result for those who stood out for one race.
We do not get days like this at Springfield often and it is a good training when we do.
Cheers

DF65 Scratch
Saturday 20th July 2024
Today’s DF65 sailing was exciting with a scratch event on the 20th July, with blustery wind conditions swirling all around the lake. Which made sailing enjoyable, a little tricky at times but a lot of fun. Downsizing from A+ rig to A rig which for me hasn’t seen the light of day for some time. With plenty of breeze across the lake sailors had to pick their lines and tacks.
The lead changed five times with 9 races completed and the wins are
Congratulations to 1st place Ian Gordon, 2nd Ian Robertson with 3rd Bruce McLaren.

Well, what can I say, first day back after a five-month enforced break, sixteen members showed up today either for a social sail or just a visit.
Ten of those who came along braved the conditions and stayed for DF65 Handicap racing.
The day had very little breeze but plenty of weed made up for the lack of wind. It was heard several times if that’s weed slowing me down, I’m going home. But no one tossed the Teddy and carried out their threats.
Even though there was a lack of breeze and lots of weed, all in all a good day was had, because of the social gathering. I think that is what a lot of people missed (the social side of it).
Congratulations to Bob B who managed to just pip the 2 Ians for 1st place.

What a spectacular day sailing the DF-65s at Eagleby!
This location, a sanctuary with a flock of eagles nesting in a gum tree above the sailing venue, offers a perfect backdrop. The eagles observed with interest the sailors who ventured into the lake to compete in the DF65 Fun Sprint Series, which is held weekly at Eagleby.
Today, 15 people turned up, including the fourth-ranked world champion, Mr. Andrew Gibbs, sailing boat number 514. He provided a spectacular lesson on settings and shared how he achieved such splendid results in the recent world titles held in Sweden. We captured a video of his informative session, which will be included on the YouTube channel at a later stage.
The conditions were perfect: 21 degrees, blue skies, and a 10-kilometre south-westerly breeze, making for some very close racing. Thank you to all the participants for the joyful and jovial behaviour that is characteristic of Eagleby's great culture and friendliness. We welcome all new members and aim to increase our numbers regularly.
The day was interesting as beginners were given a 60 second handicap head start, making it a challenge for experienced sailors to catch up over the course. Two new starters, Andrew's sons Gatsby and Boston, sailed superbly despite it being only their fourth or fifth time sailing the DF-65s. We look forward to seeing the boys sail regularly.
The day ended with some great results from various skippers. The feather duster went to Andrew Gibbs, who sailed superbly throughout the day.
We look forward to seeing you all at this regular weekly Saturday 11 to 2 pm event. Come along and enjoy the spectacular scenery and great sailing. Bye for now!
DF65 Handicap - Round 1
Saturday 13 Jan 2024
It was the first round of the DF65 Handicap Series today. 17 boats lined up for the massed start on 30 secs handicap. The wind was variable ESE, generally co-operative with being in the right place at the right time, the order of the day. There were plenty of close finishes giving the line callers and recorders a challenging time. Great job, thanks Shelley and Kay. Thanks also for John H for handling the PRO and Handicapping duties. Roy was showing us how its done earning him a 60sec handicap before he had to retire for babysitting duties.
Congratulations to the winners

DF65 Handicap- Round 7
Saturday 25th November 2023
Another great day at Springfields Lakes RYC with our DF 65 Handicap racing.
It was overcast and mild with only a few drops of rain that no-one noticed because we were all concentrating hard.
Fifteen skippers completed 8 races with 7 different winners. Mike and Roy had the highest handicaps all day and started each race from the rear of the fleet. Andrew Gibb came up from the Gold Coast (Paradise RYC). He said our site is challenging which makes it exciting. Shelly did a great job with many very close finishes.
Congratulations to Ian Gordon, Andrew and John.
DF65 Scratch- Round 7
Saturday 4th November 2023
Another superb day at Springfield Lakes.
Wind of 5-7knots that was mostly coming from the same direction with the occasional slight change that meant you did not need to use the rudder to go from a port to a starboard tack or vice versa. It did at times drop out to leave the fleet becalmed but soon came back to make for some exciting close competition. Starts went very well with only a few boats crossing the line early and when considering that we had 16 sailors this was not easy.
The course was a start from right to left with a port rounding on buoy number 1 and then a downwind run to buoy number 6 again with a port rounding. Two laps was the order of the day. This allowed for the boats to spread out but there was quite a bit of congestion around the buoys with a few (a lot ) calls for buoy room and starboard.
Congratulations to Mike Jeffries ,Gary Earl and Bruce McClaren on their 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively for the day. Also thanks goes to Ian Lobley for the BBQ and John Heard for his role as PRO and not to forget Shelley for recording the results.
We are running out of sailing days before Christmas so we all need to make the most of the next few weeks.
Looking forward to next Saturday which is DF95 Scratch racing.
Cheers

DF65 Handicap- Round 6
Saturday 14th October 2023
Thanks to all who attended the 6th Round of the DF65 Hcap series today at Springfield Lakes.
The weather report predicted a warm sunny day with 2-4 knots for 1:30 and it didn’t disappoint as that was about what we had for the event. I am not sure of how many people turned up for the sailing in general however we had 12 starters for the Hcap event.
Ken Swalwell took out 1st place with 26 points followed by Ken Godwin with a close 27 points and Ian Robertson 30 points.
Congratulants to those 3 and the rest of the participants whose scores were also close.
I counted 9 separate winners for the 9 races and those that didn’t get a win had a second in at least 1 race.
Well done Roy also as most of the day starting on around 100 handicap with little or no wind at the start of some of the races.
A special thanks to Doug Wells who was PRO, Starter, Scorer and observer. Thanks to the first place who seconded for the all important finishing official, helping Doug. Thanks Ian Robertson for calculating the handicaps and producing the finish places.
I had a great time today as I am sure all attendees did also.

DF65 Scratch- Round 6
Saturday 9th September 2023
Another day of mixed winds at Springfield. Somehow it always seems to be like this but none of us can get used to it. The wind varied from 1 to 6 kph throughout the day.
The winds came from opposite directions meaning the start line direction changed often as did the start wind strength. All for a good day’s sailing and challenging time. The buoys at times were crowded with a lot of boats trying to get around before the wind dropped making for some tight skippering and close sailing.
Congratulations to Mike (4 wins),Roy (3 wins ) and Ian R (2 wins) . We had a total of 11 boats and managed to sail 10 races which is a great an achievement considering at times we were stalled for wind and had a total sailing time of just short of 3 hours.
Thanks to all who attended and contributed to a truly great day.

DF65 Scratch- Round 5
Saturday 19th August 2023
Today's racing at Springfield Lakes brought a change of pace and a breath of fresh air. The usual calm conditions took a back seat as a robust southwesterly breeze swept in.
The wind, a rare guest at Springfield Lakes, played a leading role today. The pivotal question (which we pondered over sausages) was: A+ rig or A rig? With the breeze dying off just a little, those who took a risk with the A+ from the start generally found themselves with an advantage.
But there was a hint of caution in the air: with stronger breeze always comes an increased risk of breaking something. A minor hiccup took boat 423 temporarily out of action, yet salvation was at hand as Ian R had his spare boat (197) stashed away. A great idea and a seamless exchange – problem solved, even if 197 did later sneak in a brief disappearing act due to a low battery.
Not to be outdone, Mike (52) soon faced a technical setback when his rudder servo chose to give up the fight and burn up in a puff of smoke; perhaps having over-exerted itself due to the difficult tacking conditions. A quick repair of 423 and another round of boat swapping turned the tide for Mike, who completed the remainder of the races under sail 423 (along with a perfectly calibrated handicap of up to 30 mL water ballast).
Congratulations to today's place getters, Mike, Daniel and Roy.
Finally, a big shout-out and thank you to Ian Watson and his wife for the BBQ, and as always to Ian Robertson and all the volunteers who make days like these possible.
See you next time. Roy W.
DF65 Scratch- Round 4
Saturday 22nd July 2023
Well, what a beautiful winters day today at Springfield Lakes for round 4 of the DF 65 scratch championship. At first today we had the Springfield Lakes Radio Yacht Club AGM, which went smoothly. Many thanks to the outgoing committee and a big congratulations to the incoming committee, all of which were the same names on the same positions
A chilly morning, greeted 23 boats which cleared into a beautiful warm day. There was some very close racing in a very competitive fleet
We had typical Springfield Lakes wind which came from all different directions during the day.
A big shout out to our new PRO Mike Jeffries who was a little confused, which made everybody else confused at times but we got all the races in.
(Keep at it Mike you'll get there.) 😂
Congratulations to our place getters.
1ST Mike Jeffries
2ND Roy Wallace
3RD Ian Robertson
Also, Many thanks to Ian Gordon and Paul for scoring also to Ian's wife Kay for the cupcakes.

DF65 Handicap - Round 5
Saturday 1st July 2023
A chilly winter’s day for the fifth round of the DF65 Handicap championship out at Springfield Lakes. Everyone warmed up with a sausage barbecue, kindly cooked by Norm, Doug and Bob before racing started at 12:30. There was a little more wind than there has been lately, although it was still very patchy. We had 13 boats entered and lots of tight and interesting racing. Congratulations to the podium beginning with Ian Ashe, with Roy Wallace in second and Doug Wells third. See you all for the next round. Finally thanks to Ian Robertson (RO), Norm Gough and Bob Bray for officiating.

What a brilliant day to for the Springfield Lakes DF65 scratch club championships today..... Temperature was a crisp cool 22° with not a cloud in the sky .....the predicted conditions were a moderate 5 to 10 km south westerly and this was exactly what was needed for close racing with 3 different clubs and 18 boats ready to race and train up for next week’s National Titles
It’s a real pleasure to Sail at Springfield as we have great fun members with good natured ribbing and laughs all day long with competitors from all over South East Queensland turning up to tune up for the upcoming National titles
Congratulations to all who took part for the way they conducted themselves and to all performances today …. we had a wide number of winners and fantastic performance from everyone
Thank you to the helpers at Springfield for their efforts…. Tom, Lis and Ian G with a tasty BBQ, tea ☕️ coffee ☕️ compliments of John H… as usual Shelley, Gail and Ian A doing a great job calling across the line.

DF65 Handicap- Round 4
Saturday 29th April 2023
A mild comfortable day at Springfield Lakes today for the 4th round of the DF65 Handicap. John Heard was missed at the starting line, thanks John for wearing many hats, PRO, Scorer, Organizer, boat retriever and coffee provider. Thanks Ian R for calculating and Ian L for posting results to the web page, also to those that helped score after placing well, and the 15 starters making for a perfect day.
0-2-4 knots of wind at times saw the field spread over a length of the course and other times congregated at the first mark. There was enough wind most of the time to keep the boats moving however some of the starts were a little short of breath with delays of 20-30s for some of the skippers.
Congratulations to the winners and runners up as noted in the result sheet. 5 winners from 8 races. I am sure everyone enjoyed the racing as much as I did and I am looking forward to our next DF65 Scratch event 20 May.
For those wanting to get your keel wet, come down to the lake for the DF65 Thursday Regatta next Thursday. See the Calendar for other dates for this event.

DF65 Handicap - Round 3
Saturday 25th March 2023
It was a warm sultry day at Springfield Lakes today for the 3rd round of the DF65 handicap. The event started at 12:00 with 13 participants, some of our regular members missing but still with a respectful number of competitors for the event.
The day went smoothly with the skippers doing the PRO job until a mechanical breakdown retired John Hocking from the event which allowed him to take over the role. Thanks John.
The first races were run under trying conditions with 0-4knots of wind coming from all corners of the lake when moving at all. The field spread with the unpredictable conditions, not what is supposed to happen at a Handicap event. The wind picked up for race 4 & 5, a storm rolled in for the last with the last boats coming off the water as the rain started to fall. It was decided to end the event early as the rain wasn’t going to clear and the wind had dropped to 0 knts.
There were 4 winners out of the 6 races. Congratulations to Ken Godwin (14.8)taking out top place with Doug Wells (18.7)then Bruce McLaren(21.3) following close behind.
Congratulations to Andrew Sexton winning the last race and I think is his first win so everyone will now be expecting big things from him.

DF65 Scratch- Round 2
Saturday 18th March 2023
Springfield again, put on a great day with a wonderful barbecue, camaraderie and a competitive event
Events are always nice here because there are good people to sail with ….a lot of help provided from everyone to the new sailors …. With good competition
It was a tricky day with good breezes, and then areas where there was no wind ….leading to most people having varied results for the day
Sailors love today as it was excellent conditions for learning ….despite the testing breeze which tested everyone’s skills
John Hocking who is a new member with a very strong trailer sailor background out of Moreton Bay mentioned that he loves sailing the DF65 as it provides great competition in a friendly fun environment
Mark Jents provided great tuning tips from the sideline ….identifying and helping members with their issues all day long so thanks, Mark
Congratulations to the podium winners
1st Mike Jefferys on 7.5 points, 2nd Roy Wallace on 24.5 points and 3rd Ian Robertson on 25 points.
(We had 2 ties (dead heats) that couldn't be separated in race 5 and 6 .. IanL)
Thanks also to all the volunteers, including John Heard for doing the PRO job, Shelley and Bob Bray for calling and scoring across the line, and of course the guys who did the BBQ (and Norm for the cake), and all competitors for a fun day. See you on the water. Cheers for now

DF65 Scratch- Round 1
Saturday 28th January 2023
Today we had 17 boats take to the water. Winds were very variable and in the end racing was cancelled due to a severe thunderstorm. But a good day was had by all. We only completed 5 races but because of the circumstances it was decided to include this Rnd 1 series in the Club Championship.
Our visitor from Sydney, John Wyatt, who was on his way through to the DF65 State Championships tomorrow at PRYC, was very consistent and looks like a real contender for tomorrow's event. Good luck for tomorrow John.
Congratulations to Roy Wallace, Ian Ashe and John Heard who filled the first three club championship positions. Thanks to John heard and the skippers who shared the PRO job and Shelley for scoring for the day.
Next Wednesday is Match Racing for the DF95s, enter here

DF65 Handicap - Round 1
Saturday 14th January 2023
January 14th first round of the DF65 Handicap.
Last week was WOW but this week was DOUBLE WOW with 22 boats in the line up.
A good day on the water with a fairly consistant breeze from the ESE for most of the day.
The fleet size meant that the start line was set on the western end of the course to cater for the large fleet giving a reasonable beat to the first mark which as usual created a few hassles getting around that elusive windward mark.
Seven races for the day, six different winners with Andrew picking up two wins for the day. Well done Andrew.
Congratulations to the place getters Mike, Ian R and Nev.
Thanks to those who shared the Race Officer duties, the handicappers and those calling of the boats as they crossed the finish line
