The Design

Background: This is my great Aunt Gladys. She was born in 1896 and this image was taken when she was around 20-25 years old. I had the opportunity to meet her. She was living in a retirement community and always had little packages of M&M's to give out to those who visited her.

Contrast: I kept the contrast in her skirt and top. I picked blue for the background for it may have been her favorite color.

Alignment: I used the triangle crop in Photoshop, this allowed me to balance the image.

Proxmity: Since this is a image and one from a slide, I didn't mess with any elements that represent proxmity.

Repitition: There isn't anything in this image that I repeated.

Color Scheme: I kept the image colors mostly original. The blue background added more visual interest.

Font Choice: I didn't add any text to the image.

Photoshop: My grandpa had a bunch of old slides, this image was one of those. Once I digitized the slide, I opened it in Photoshop. I didn't change anything in camera raw, because I wanted it as close to the original as I could get. Once I had the image in Photoshop, I cropped it using the triagnle guide. After the crop, I used the spot healing tool to take out the noise of the image. I used both the lighten and darken settings. Once I had the image edited, I added a black and white layer mask which allowed the image to be more uniform.

As for the color, I used a solid layer mask, changed the mask to soft light and inverted the color. Using the brush tool, I painted the image. I did layer the skin colors to add more depth. While I didn't know her with dark brown hair, my grandpa gave me the inside scoop. I kept her shirt and skirt the original colors. I did the same solid layer mask to change the background to blue. Since the image isn't as sharp as the ones today, I did use a soft edge brush while painting.
