Peace, Be Still

The original image

Using Mark 4:37-41 as my inspiration.

The Design

Background Information: This is my take on Mark 4:37-41. The world has felt turbulent and frenzied, so I wanted the image to represent that when we are in the hands of Christ, our life can feel calm and clear. The scripture in Mark takes place on a boat, hence the folded paper ones in the image.

Contrast: The imagine came with this great contrast between the darker blues and blacks and the white boats. I kept that consistant but played around with the texture. I wanted the image to show that the farther away we are from Jesus Christ (representing the hands in this image), the more life gets out of focus.

Alignment: I used the golden ratio with the largest boat and again with the boat resting on the finger.

Proxmity: The image already has a great sense of proxmity with the boats, so I didn't change those at all.

Repitition: I reapeated the photoshop brush on the top and bottom, getting smaller as I got closer to the arms and hands. I wanted the image to reflect what is happening to the top is the same as what is happening to the bottom.

Color Scheme: I matched the white from the boats to the white in the text. I wanted the text to be very subtle and not detract from the boats but I wanted it on the arm.

Font Choice: I wanted a more formal font, quoting scripture just felt like it should be. The font is a sarif type called Kinesis Pro 3.

Photoshop: In camera raw, I adjusted the image by increasing the black, shadows and highlights. I turned the temperature and tint down both to -5. I wanted the image to look a bit more moody.

Once I got the image into photoshop, I cropped the original to focus on the hands and the paper boats. I lined up the image using the golden rule with the boats.

I wanted the focus on be on the hands. To accomplish this I used the art history brush tool. I started with a larger brush size on the top and bottom and as I moved inward, the brush size got smaller. I kept the hands and arms clear because I wanted the image to reflect how it can feel to be in the hands of Christ.

I added the scripture reference to the arm. It is dissovled and warped. I didn't want to text to interfere with the focus on the hands.
