Dracula's Book

Dracula Book Design

The Design

Background: Each year I choose a classic book to read or listen to. This year's choice is Dracula by Bram Stoker. It has been a fantastic listen so I thought a book cover would be sweet to do.

Contrast: I stuck with the black, white and red colors but flipped them on the bottom of the book. The red really stands out with the white and the black.

Alignment: The title Dracula spans the entire book cover, but I kept the author's name inline with the title. I wanted the eyes to follow the direction of the wing so I pointed to the authors name there.

Proxmity: As you can see, the title and author's name are near each other. I kept them that way for a sense of continuity.

Repitition: I repeated the image of the bat wing and color matched the title and blood stain.

Color Scheme: In homage to past Dracular book covers, I kept to the same colors the majority of them use. It really does encapsulate the story to use those colors.

Font Choice: I didn't use the blood dripping font on purpose, I went with a font which looks older and slightly elegant. I image Dracula being elegant in an off setting type of way. This font is called CartaMarnia.

Photoshop: I started with the bat. Once I had the image in photoshop, I cropped it to focus on the wing. As you can see in the original image, it wasn't horizontal so I straightened that as well. With the batwing, I copied the image and turned it to a smart image so I could invert the color and change the size without changing the pixels.

I used the rectangle tool to create a black square and put the inverted batwing on the black background. I found an image of a blood slpatter (things are getting bloody in the book) that I thought would look great with the black background. The blood splatter was a little too strong, so I changed the opacity so it wasn't as heavy.

I color matched the blood splatter and the Dracula title.
