The Man

The Design

Revisions: I cropped the image down more to focus on the fighter. After some great feedback, the smoke made the image look a bit strange so I decided to only color in the boxing gloves. The text was changed from all caps.

Background: The 'Man in the Arena' is my favorite quote. This is a line from it. The quote is part of a larger speech given in 1910 by then President Theodore Roosevelt.

Contrast: I wanted the focus on the fighter not the audience, for that is what the quote is all about. I kept the spectators in black and white while highlighiting the boxer.

Alignment: A hard right alightment of the quote helps promote the fighter in the middle. I didn't want to take away from the fighter walking or the atmosphere of the image so I kept the quote to the side.

Proxmity: I wanted to keep the words 'the man' inline with the fighter so while they are spaced apart, your eye connects the words to the fighter. I felt the quote looked better in a group than all spread out.

Repitition: The color of the 'the man' in the quote is the same color of the fighters boxing gloves. This gives the image a sense of continuity.

Color Scheme: The red of the boxing gloves, symbolizing the fight is what I based my color choice off of. Red, white and black have high contrast.

Font Choice: I wanted a bold, in your face, fighting type of font so I went with Railroad Gothic. The quote in white is the regular while 'the man' is bolded.

The new image, after the fixes

Photoshop: After finding an image which represented the fight of being in an arena, I downloaded and intially opened the image in camera raw. I used the auto edit function to see what suggestions were made. The highlghts were lessened and the shadows were increased. I stuck with those changes from camera raw.

Once uploaded to Photoshop, I used a mask to turn the picture back and white. Once I had the picture void of color, I used the object selection tool to grab the fighter walking to the ring. I created a new layer and made more edits to the fighter, I used the black color brush to edit the mask and gave the fighter more color using the dissolve option in the layer.

With the quote, I aligned it to the middle of the image and found a font that had the right message, bold and strong. I wanted the white font color to create a higher contrast within the image.
