The Parish of Pazhayidom
It is from Meenachil, Kuravilangadu, Kottayam and Kuttanad, in the year of 1897, that people started migrating to Pazhayidom. These people were mainly Catholics and they started parishes in Cheruvally, Chirakadavu, Manimala, Kottangal and started their worship and prayers. As they had to tread for five or six kilometers to attend the Holy Mass, they joined hands to construct their own church building and as a result put up a thatched temporary Church building in the year 1921. This included a place for the priests to stay, the place to offer mass and administer other sacraments.
In the year 1923, His Excellency Mar Thomas Kurialasserry, the Bishop of Changanacherry. granted permission to Fr. ChandyKurisummoottil, Vicar of Thamarakunnu Church at Chirakka- davu, to bless the building and to offer mass, which were duly carried out. On October 15, 1923, His Excellency Mar Thomas Kurialasserry raised the church to the status of a parish.
It was Fr. Chandy Kurisummottil who christened the church after the name of St. Michael, He had already constructed a chapel in the name of St. Michael when he was vicar at Kaduthuruthy. According to him, through the intercession of St. Michael many miracles were happening at that church. It was this good news that prompted the people of Pazhayidom to name the church after St. Michael as they also anticipated the same showers of blessings to happen in the new parish too.
Now many people testify that they receive a great number of blessings through the intercession of St. Michael. We pray that this website will lead many to the devotion to St. Michael.
