"Calamity" is a reductive value charcoal drawing that—in my opinion—is the best drawing I have made to date. The piece focuses chimera-esque creatures, one juvenile and one adult. The bones are that of a piranha head, a manatee body, and dolphin heads for hands. The references images for said bones were initially from boneclones.com and the feedback I got on the piece was that it would have been nice to have the juvenile in-between the adult's legs and the spine on the adult was a little too fuzzy.
As for what the context was, well, this creature is intended to be a prehistoric aquatic lifeform which existed during the no bone zone land area. Also, as you can likely tell, this creature does not subscribe to the "fish are friends not food" perspective.
"Plague" is—you guessed it—a skull of a bird. The reason it is called "Plague" is because it is reminiscent of the plague doctor's Medico Della Peste. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, the entire class used the same skull as a reference image for this project. In short, there are many like it, but this one is mine.
"Vacant Vase" is—well—a vacant vase. This project also had many people examining and drawing the same thing, and I am sad to say that mine is no where near the best. Alas, from my experience in art some are savants, individuals that can manifest the third dimension of reality onto the limited constraints imposed by the page. In my mind I can create things of even greater grandeur than that, yet, once they are translated to the mediums allotted to me, they are mere ruins of what they once were… vacant vases left forgotten on a shelf of a forlorn house distended for demolition.
Additive Charcoal Drawings
"Failure" is a failure. When I finished it my disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined. I used a reference image for it, but I couldn't get the textures right, nor could I fully emulate what I was envisioning. I guess you could call it a stylized piece, but I find that it just isn't up to snuff.
"Odd Gloom" is called odd gloom because the shadows are warped from the realist approach I was going for. Especially that bottle in the far back…it's horrendous. Oh the horror! I tried to get the spot out, but no matter how many times I scrubbed the imperfections stayed there. I guess all that is left to do is despair.
"Shoeot" is a play on words, I'll leave you to figure out which ones. Know, it does look like it is on a blank canvas, but if you squint really hard you can see a tiny line near the top of the page to indicate the horizon line.
On another note, that shoe has a whole nonfiction piece written about it. If you click on the image it will take you to it.
