Ways of car-sharing
Car-sharing has been around for decades - just think about hiring a car at the airport, taking a taxi, or using a friend or family member's car when you were learning to drive.
Nowdays, there are a lot of ways of sharing cars.
Informal sharing with a friend or family member (adding someone else to your insurance, or using one of the new 'insure by the day' services such as Veygo, Cuvva, or Dayinsure)
Peer-to-Peer sharing: making your car available to verified people for money on an app (Hiyacar, Karshare, Turo, Getaround)
Closed loop Peer-to-Peer sharing: doing the above, but in a trusted group of people (this is what we did)
Commercial car clubs: borrowing a car owned by a company via an app
Community car clubs: sharing a local car within a closed community
Lift-sharing with strangers (BV
Lift-sharing a regular journey with a closed community (group of friends, or workplace)
More details provided in the diagram below. There's a lot of research on this by the wonderful CoMoUK https://como.org.uk/ and regardless of the type of share, car-sharing reduces both overall car-usage and car numbers so if you're interested in reducing cars, do consider sharing yours.
