Top tips for giving up a car (or going from 2 cars to 1)

We're not here to tell you to give up your car. Infact, if everyone did it, there would be no cars to share. However, people have asked us about it so we've spoken to a few people who have done it and got the following tips.

1. Think about the benefits: Save money. Get fitter. Save time & admin. Go green.

2. Remember it doesn’t have to be a permanent thing. You might just try it for a few weeks. Or experiment by leaving a month between selling one car and buying another. If you try it and it doesn’t work, buy another car.

3. Write down / think about when you actually used your car in the last couple of weeks. Think about how you could do those journeys in a different way. Work out your 'emergency' plan - what emergency could happen and what would you do if your car was broken down and you couldn't use it?

4. Love taxis. Don’t worry about taking a taxi to and from the supermarket if you can't borrow a car – you’re saving £70 per week through not owning a car.

5. Work out how much money you're saving. Figures I give are for UK average car, but if you look back over your last 12 months bank statements it's pretty easy to work out all the things you've spent on your car. Don't forget depreciation. It’s average £10 per day – £300 per month - it soon adds up. Treat yourself to something after a few weeks.

6. Consider ‘convenience’ vs ‘need’. Do you really need a car or is it just convenient? Some people do really need a car, but many of us just like owning one because it suits us. What would it take you to go down to one car or to give one up altogether?

7. Work out your emissions. Giving up a car (-2.4 tons per year) is the same as 3 adults going vegan (0.8 tons each) or 20 flights to Rome (0.125 tons each). If you have them, talk to your kids about the decision and why it's important to do it.

8. Work out your alternatives. Need a car over the summer holidays? Rent one, or use Octopus EV or Onto (see below). Going camping for the weekend? Borrow a friend's car or rent one. Start to enjoy the train.

9. Think of all the other benefits… free exercise! Lose weight! Less pollution! More space infront of your house! Have a drink at the pub!... and all the annoyances avoided: no finding a parking space, no petrol stations, no road tax, no MOT, no car-washing, no parking permits…

10. Consider how proud / smug not owning a car will make you - you are taking a really big step to help stop the effects of climate change.

When I started ShareOurCars I thought I'd keep my car and rent it out - I've got 3 kids under age 7, so it seemed essential. Then I thought about all the money I'd save and all the other benefits to car-sharing, and I took the step of getting rid of our family car. Since then, I've just shared my neighbours cars. I've also tested renting an EV-by-the-month with Octopus EV (OnTo also do this service) and it's what I'll be doing for the summer holidays when I think we do really want a car.
