The Night Stalker 5⭐
Main Characters:
Robert Hunter
Carlos Garcia
”Wow, your reputation is well deserved. You figured out something no one else could.”
Think of a detective so brilliant that even serial killers are impressed by his intelligence. Detective Robert Hunter is THAT guy 😎😎, and we're back with another amazing investigation conducted by him and his partner, Carlos Garcia.
By now, I can confidently say that the Robert Hunter series is my all-time favorite crime fiction series ✨✨ Chris Carter has given me everything I've ever wanted from the genre: short, fast-paced chapters that keep you hooked, a calm and collected detective who still has his humanity and sarcasm intact, lovable side characters, brutal murders, and storylines packed with twists and surprises.
These books are ridiculously addictive, and Chris Carter writes with such care that you never feel like an outsider waiting for the narrator to explain everything to you. Instead, you're right there with the detectives, following the investigation and trying to piece things together yourself. If I had to choose just one author to read for the rest of my life in every genre, I'd pick Chris Carter for crime fiction without a second thought 👌👌
In The Night Stalker, Hunter and Garcia are investigating a series of brutal murders involving women with similar physical features whose mouths and genital areas have been sewn shut. It's disturbing, gruesome, and absolutely horrifying 😱😱 And, as always, our duo dives straight into the investigation.
What made this case particularly interesting was that we followed two separate investigative paths. One of the victims' relatives contacts a private investigator, and while we're following Hunter and Garcia as they work on the case, we also get a separate POV that eventually intersects with their investigation 🧐🧐
I LOVED this! I couldn't stop wondering when the two parties would finally cross paths and how everything would come together. Having that second perspective added another layer to the investigation and kept me curious about how the different pieces would eventually connect 😊😊
As for the case itself, there's not much I can say without getting into spoilers. All I can tell you is that it was jaw-dropping, brutal, and SO well done. But I also have to talk about my favorite crime-solving duo because I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN HUNTER AND GARCIA 🤣🤣
Garcia had been Hunter’s partner for almost four years, since he had joined the RHD. He knew Hunter wasn’t a conventional detective. He could figure things out faster than anyone Garcia had ever met. Most of the time, no one even understood how he did it until he explained, and then it all seemed so simple. Hunter listened a lot more than he spoke. When he did speak, not everything he said made sense at first, but in the end, everything always slotted into place like a jigsaw puzzle. But sometimes Garcia had to admit Hunter seemed to inhabit a different dimension to everyone on this planet. This was one of those times.
GARCIA IS THE REPRESENTATION OF US 😍😍
The confusion and bewilderment he experiences whenever Robert says or does something that makes absolutely no sense to him until everything suddenly clicks into place make my day. We might be reading about a genius detective, but Garcia's reactions are often exactly what I'm thinking. Watching him try to keep up with Robert is hilarious, and their partnership is one of my favorite parts of this series.
Also, can we PLEASE appreciate the fact that my boy finally made it through a book without getting hospitalized for once?! 😂😂 He was so happy about it, and honestly, so was I!
And then there's Robert's sassiness. I LOVE how brutally judgmental this man can be inside his own head 😝😝 His face might remain completely expressionless, as you'd expect from a professional detective, but his internal commentary is a whole different story. He can be SO shady when someone gets on his nerves, and I live for it. Just look at this sentence:
Hunter wondered if he threw a hundred bucks out the window, would Laurent jump after it?
The fact that Robert can think something like this while maintaining his usual calm, unreadable expression makes it even funnier. I swear, this man is so much sassier in his head than he lets on, and I absolutely love that about him.
Commander Blake also deserves a special mention because she was absolutely amazing in this book. Her brilliance genuinely made my jaw drop, and she showed us exactly why she rose to her rank. She's such a strong, capable woman, and I loved seeing her shine like this 💅💅 Her relationship with Hunter and Garcia also grew stronger throughout the book, which made me appreciate their dynamic even more.
And then there's Doctor Wilson... 💔💔 Let's just say I was NOT ready for the sadness this book brought me. I really appreciated having him as part of the story, so his absence hit me harder than I expected.
As for the killer, his backstory was genuinely heartbreaking and disturbing. This was a deeply broken man who needed to be locked away, with little hope of ever truly recovering. Honestly, I find it difficult to imagine him ever getting better, and his story left me feeling deeply unsettled 😖😖
Overall, this was another five-star read for me! The dual investigation, the brutal and shocking case, and, of course, Hunter and Garcia's incredible partnership made this book such a compelling read. Chris Carter knows exactly how to keep me hooked, and I'm already excited to dive into the next book! See you in the next book's review! 👋👋
