SOME SWANKY SOIREE
Logline:
After a natural-born jerk experiences an occurrence of luck that makes him super rich, he takes his one-and-only friend along for a world tour, and learns a lesson about life - that it’s no fun when there’s nobody to enjoy it with.
Synopsis:
Dante N’ferno is an asshole. Anybody who knows him knows
this. Everybody that has to deal with him dreads it. Even
his housemate, “Hachoo” Jefferson, is just barely able
to bear being around him. Then one night, Dante crosses
paths with a “special” man. This man, named Paul, gives
Dante a ticket to excessive wealth, which doesn’t seem
to change Dante, but only magnifies his rudeness. After
confirming his financial windfall, Dante goes into a state
of disregard for reason and suckers Hachoo into the ride.
He makes promises to Hachoo of world travels. But first, he
just has to throw a “got rich” celebration wholly for the
purpose of boasting and gloating. During the party Dante
has an unpleasant exchange with the next-door neighbor when
she comes to comment about the disturbance. This prompts
Dante, who is feeling like king almighty, to resort to
nasty tactics. And that motivates him to suggest to Hachoo
that they get their jet-setting started immediately.
Dante and Hachoo start their travels off “light”,
staying in the U.S., going to California then Miami. Dante,
with all the riches in the world, still cannot manage to
be pleasant. And Hachoo is hardly able to enjoy himself at
all in the presence of Dante. Upon returning home, Dante is
summoned to speak with a detective concerning the vandalism
of the next-door neighbor’s property. Dante puts on his
best act. But he doesn’t fool the seasoned investigator.
What he does do - is betray his only friend. After leaving
the interrogation Dante rushes to find Hachoo so that he
can persuade him to drop everything that he has going on
and pick up where they left off, globetrotting. They travel
to South Africa. They travel to Egypt. They travel to
Dubai. But wherever they go it’s the same story, Dante is
much too arrogant to tolerate and never fails to ruin the
day, and Hachoo always seems to be trying to clean up the
mess. In Dubai, when Dante causes a scene at an otherwise
wondrous dinner, their relationship implodes because of the
dissent. Planning on parting ways for good, Dante abandons
Hachoo in Dubai and heads back home.
While packing his things to move, Dante happens across
an old newspaper that Hachoo left sitting around. And in
that paper is an article regarding the “special” man,
Paul, that is responsible for all of Dante’s fortunes. He
discovers that Paul was a mentally impaired person who had
been missing from his supervised-care facility, and that
he had been found dead. This, something, finally touches
Dante. He is moved to make a change.
In the meanwhile, Hachoo makes it back home to find out
how Dante has gotten his name mixed up in that senseless
police investigation. He is furious. When he goes to meet
with the detective Dante is there. Dante asks for a moment
to speak with his buddy, and asks his forgiveness. The
two make amends. But there is still the criminal matter
to address. Dante, in his “changed state”, confesses,
and suggests not only a way to repair that situation,
but also make up for all, or, hopefully, most of his past
transgressions. A rather wholesome conclusion to an
outrageous experience.
