MY DEAR BRUTE
An American Tragedy
Logline:
A troubled man relocates from Detroit to Los Angeles and becomes the bodyguard for an up-and-coming producer, the love interest of a rising starlet, and ultimately the fugitive suspect of a brutish Hollywood murder.
Synopsis:
DeWayne Coltrane, an intimidating young man with a
troubled past, has just recently returned home from his
second imprisonment. Depressed, and mourning the absence of
his parents (his father then his mother each died during
his respective incarcerations), he decides to pick up
and relocate from Detroit to Hollywood. With no specific
plan of action, he makes the move. In accordance with his
typical daring manner, DeWayne imagines that he will go at
Hollywood “head first” and make something happen. One night
on the town he makes an unusual acquaintance with Brian, a
homosexual slickster and native of West Hollywood. Brian
manages to sustain a conversation with DeWayne, in which
they agree on some mutual interests. DeWayne decides to
take Brian up on an invitation to a party in Malibu, where
he is upset to witness Brian’s genuine lifestyle. But, he
is fortunate to make the acquaintance of Absolon Andrews,
a gay trust fund heir who has been cast out by his father
and also just recently settled in LA to pursue a career as
a producer.
Strangely, DeWayne and Absolon take a liking to each
other, share an interest in one another, and begin a
friendship of sorts. Their friendship quickly goes through
the catalogue of emotions, and becomes a macho battle of
the wits. DeWayne intends to benefit from Absolon’s status
in Hollywood. Absolon plans to “flex his muscle” on the
brute. DeWayne begins to work as bodyguard for Absolon, and
they maintain a continuous battle over work and personal
issues. Only the arrival of Simone Blanc can help to cool
things down. Simone is the dear friend of Absolon from
France, an actress who has come to do business on behalf of
her esteemed companion. She tames Absolon’s insensitivities
toward DeWayne. And in the meanwhile, she and DeWayne
develop a relationship. There is still tension between the
two men. But things are starting to look good.
Everything seems to finally be on the right track.
DeWayne and Simone are falling in love, and Simone becomes
pregnant. She asks DeWayne to consider returning to
France with her. Then one night changes everything. This
particular night, Absolon and Simone are at an advanced
screening of a film that Absolon had a hand in producing.
DeWayne is out drinking, reminiscing his parents. He has
decided that he will go to Paris with Simone. But before
he can end the night on a good note, he crosses paths
with Brian. And before the night is over people will be
dead, including Absolon. DeWayne’s life will begin its
descent into ruins. And Simone will experience the most
tragic occurrences ever. Also, the killings that take place
that night lead DeWayne to New Mexico, where he goes into
hiding, and bring him special attention from the television
program AMERICA’S MOST WANTED. A shocking development to a
story hinting of hope.
