EXT. PUBLIC STREET – DAY
Dawn. 50 years in the future. PENCIL PUSHKIN, Black male, mid-thirties, a highly successful, world-famous writer, is ending his night of wandering Downtown, USA. With nearly empty wine bottle in hand, he comes within sight of the hotel where he is staying. PAPARAZZI lurk in the vicinity of the building. Pencil heads for the hotel, speaking loudly, poetically, to the atmosphere as he approaches.
PENCIL
I journey the streets at night, with hope to confront all my fright. And then I parade around by day, mustering all that I have to say.
Pencil comes upon the façade of the hotel.
Paparazzi swarm with their cameras flashing.
Pencil appears unfazed. He raises the bottle, as if to toast, and poses in motion. Some paparazzi begin to pry.
PAPARAZZO 1
It appears as though this is the
conclusion to an interesting night for you Pencil?
PENCIL
I will assume that it was certainly more interesting than yours – you stalking whores.
PAPARAZZO 2
Pencil, any grand expectations for
the award ceremonies tonight?
Pencil reaches the front entrance. He stops and turns around to address the cameras.
PENCIL
I expect – for you all to wait, and watch the natural progression of tonight’s event like every other decent citizen of the world.
PAPARAZZO 3
Does your excitement rival Mrs.
Harbinger’s, considering the pre-
dictions for her to win the World’s Exemplary Educator Declaration?
Pencil pauses for an instant.
PENCIL
I pray she has gotten the weed. Now good people – by this next gesture, I mean to say farewell.
Pencil turns his back and enters the building, off to his room...
