Supplies

Band students should obtain the following items in order to be the best prepared. Supplies can be purchased at most area music stores.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Parents and Students - Please email Mr. Niehoff (sniehoff@fcps.edu) before you purchase a new instrument!! There are many companies out there who make substandard instruments that are not great quality, break very easily, and do not have appropriate tone.  PLEASE - Before you purchase, please email Mr. Niehoff and ask which brands are reputable and great quality that will last for years to come. You will save yourself a lot of money in the long run and many wasted repair bills.

ALL Students:

·         Instrument (with corresponding Mouthpiece, Ligature, and accessories.)

·         Music stand (for home practice)

·         Metronome (There are some great apps for these - many of them are free.) 

·         Tuner (There are some great apps for these.)

·         Planner/Agenda

·         Pencil

·         Binder

·         Music

Flutes:

·         Cleaning rod and silk cleaning swab.

All Clarinets and Saxophones:

·         At least five (5) good reeds (Size 3 Vandoren brand reeds please due to the round, smooth, & warm-tone they produce.)

·         Silk cleaning swab and cork grease.

·         Cushioned or gel neck strap. (Saxophones) Neotech is a great brand.

All oboes and bassoons:

·         Reeds and small water container for reed.

·         Silk cleaning swab and cork grease.

·         Cushioned or gel neck strap. (Bassoon)

French Horns:

·         Rotary oil (provided)

Trumpets, Baritones, Euphoniums, Tubas:

·         Valve oil

·         Flexible cleaning “snake”

·         Mouthpiece brush

·         Slide grease (for tuning slides)

Trombones:

·         Slide cream (for slide)

-   Tuning Slide Grease (for tuning slide) 

·         Small Spray Bottle (to use for slide moisture and movement)

Percussion:

• Drum Sticks (Vic Firth SD2 Bolero sticks are recommended)

• Drum Pad (Double-sided is preferred. Nothing smaller than 10”.)

• Drum Pad Stand (optional)

• Bell Kit, Piano, or Keyboard – if you are able to secure one.
