1. Problem-defintion phase
In this first phase of 5, students need to define problems. Teachers can start introducing: what is a problem in relation to a question (see under links for more information about this).
Participant can now go through an open-space-phase, which is as follows
- Teacher asks 4 questions or reads a story or gives 4 keywords.
- The participants must not talk but grabs a post-it note and associates (reflects, get ideas, think about)
- Participants writes associations on the post-it and place these on the floor.
- Now students can use 10 minutes to walk around and examine the cards. No talking is allowed.
- After examining the cards, students must group the cards, 5 in each group. The criteria for group of card is, that together, they can be turned into a problem statement. No talking is allowed.
- After that students will move to a group of cards, which they would like to work with and then form a design team, meaning a group which can work with the problem.
- The designteam can now pick up the cards and supported by the teacher, they need to use the cards in order to define a problem. Teacher scaffolds them in this proces.
- Carry through an open space phase as described above.
