Peanut Butter and Jelly Partners: In my classroom I plan to have designated partners. At the beginning of the semester students will be given a peanut butter and jelly partner. One student will be peanut butter and the other will be jelly. As students have discussions, turn and talks on the rug, or partner assignments they will know which person they are paired with and there wont be time taken from the lesson to decide partners. Depending on the activity students could be asked to pair with another "peanut butter" or another "jelly," allowing them to collaborate with others or complete different parts of one assignment and then come back to their original partner for the other half of the assignment.
Cooperative Learning Groups: At the beginning of the year expectations for group work will be explained. I will emphasize how important it is to let every group member use their voice, because every voice is important and everyone's opinions are valuable. Sometimes it is easy for one student to not work as hard or for one student to be left out, so emphasizing and ensuring that every member is expected to partake is super important. Before each activity I will chose groups, mixing students up based on levels, making sure each groups has a mix of abilities and that each group is able to succeed. All directions for each cooperative learning assignment will be given before students are released into groups, as well as any questions the students may have. There will be a visual timer placed at the front of the class so that students know how much time they have and when they will be expected to shift focus.
