Relationships are an essential part of creative is comforting and peaceful environment within the classroom, they are a foundation to student learning. "Teachers who have good rapport with their students get better cooperation and have a more positive classroom climate" (Evertson and Emmer pg. 12). Good relationships with students make students more cooperative and less disruptive, students put in more effort because they don't want to disappoint you. "When good relationships are established, students know their teachers are receptive to their questions, concerned for their welfare, and supportive of their potential (Evertson and Emmer pg. 12).
1) Morning Meetings: allow teacher-student relationships to be built by creating a dedicated time for conversation, connection and community. During morning meetings students feel welcomed and valued, build connections with peers by getting to learn something new everyday, sets apart relational time with the teacher outside of instruction, and sets expectations for the day. Morning meets set apart time to discuss with students what the day will look like, including what will be learned and the schedule for the day. I will have a question of the day for students to answer, as we begin our morning meetings i will project a question on the board and go in a circle, allowing each student to choose whether they want to answer the question or pass and answer on another day.
2) Be consistent and Fair: Setting clear expectations and rules with students and staying consistent with how behaviors are addressed. Being fair and consistent helps students learn to trust you and build respect, they learn they can count on your word and count on you to follow through.
3)Morning Greetings: Being intentional every morning to notice each and every student will allow students to feel seen and heard, setting feelings for the day. I will have a list of choices on my door that students can choose a greeting from. Every morning I will stand at the door, as students walk in they will choose which type of greeting they want and i will say good morning to them using whichever one they want along with verbally saying good morning. This helps students know that it is okay to set boundaries, and that the boundaries they do set will be respected, as well as allowing relationships to be created.
4) Classroom Fridge: this will be my area where students can display their work for everyone to see. Each student will be given a number that corresponds with a number on the board for them to display any work they are proud of. They can rotate their work as they see best. Just as students would ask their parents to put their favorite artwork up on the fridge in their house, I want them to have a space where they are proud of their work and proud to see it up.
5) Feedback: Consistent feedback is a great way to show students that they are important to you and so is their learning. Positive feedback can go such a long way with students who struggle to believe in themselves, and helps build self-esteem. Students want to feel loved and seen, encouragement and feedback shows students that you care for them and their future (Evertson and Emmer, 2017). I plan on using a Grow and Glow system, where students can see one thing they did amazing on, one small area that may need improvement, and the goal they are aiming for.
