Calm Corner: a calm corner is a safe , quiet, dedicated space within the classroom that students can use when they are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, angry, etc. (Blach). This space will be away from student desks and anything that could be a danger to the student, other students, or the teacher. There will be a timer in the calm corner so students will know when it is time to try and return to class. At the beginning of the year, I will model to students how the calm corner is to be used and as any questions they have.
Classroom Library: The classroom library will be an open concept, allowing students to be seen at all times. The books will be easily reachable for all students and organized by reading level so that students know which books meet them where they are at. I will use some class time at the beginning of the year to teach students how the library is organized and any other procedures they need to know to respect the space. It is important that students know the procedures for selecting a book and how to be responsible with it, to ensure that many students get the opportunity to interact with the book (Evertson and Emmer, 2017).
Classroom Mailboxes: Each student will get a classroom mailbox. If I am teaching upper-elementary, mailboxes will be used for homeroom students only. Their mailbox is where they will place their take-home folders every morning. The teacher will place any graded work, spelling lists, and any papers that need to go home with students. I will explain the expectations to students and walk them through what to look for and how they will be used, explaining that students will check for any papers received throughout the day, put them in their folders, and take their folders home.
Extra Materials: Extra materials will be easily accessible to all students and clearly labeled ensuring they are easy to find. Students will know where they are and how to quietly grab them, returning to their seats causing minimal distractions. We will practice this at the beginning of the year, giving students a grace period to learn when is the best time to grab a new material. Having materials that are easily accessible will help remove any interruptions or wasted time during lessons and instruction time (Evertson and Emmer, 2017).
