Rudman Lab commitments and expectations for advising and training
Inspired by documents written by Dr. Nadia Singh and Dr. Andrew Whitehead
My commitment as an advisor
I commit to helping you attain your training and career goals
I will advocate for you
I will be available for regular individual meetings to help develop, conduct, and complete your thesis research
I will actively pursue funding and be open about financial resources available
We will work together to find the most impactful scientific questions to pursue and design the best possible projects to answer them
I will bring a positive attitude in all our interactions and be understanding of the challenges inherent to conducting scientific research
I will provide constructive and timely feedback on ideas, manuscripts, and grant applications
I will be cognizant of lab interpersonal dynamics and work hard to maintain a positive working environment
I will prioritize the completion of your research and thesis - providing additional help in challenging moments
When possible, I will allocate lab funding to facilitate development of skills - including supporting courses and visits to labs to learn methods or analyses that will benefit our ongoing work
When funds permit, the lab will support each trainee who has completed (or nearly completed) a research project in attending 1 conference per year
My expectations for trainees
You will be intrinsically motivated and engaged in completing your thesis research
You will communicate - both about successes and challenges in your research
You will read the primary literature, engage in scientific discussions, and work to become an expert in our discipline
You will stay aware of degree requirements and plan your work (and forms) accordingly
You will seek independent fellowship funds to support your research (and can expect help from me in doing so)
You will bring a team mentality - many of our projects are large and require an ‘all hands on deck’ level of collaboration for short stretches
You will be a considerate and conscientious lab member. This includes maintaining lab resources, contributing to shared efforts, and helping fellow lab members
You will complete yearly IDPs to keep me aware of your goals and we will work together to achieve them
You will be dogged in finding the most important and interest research projects to pursue and committed to completing these projects
You will be scientifically productive - with a commitment to publishing your work
