We use our Apple TV to sceenplay for homeschool and to access all Apple Apps via our TV screen. We also use it to download apps for streaming. We've had and used it for over 7 years and I also used this as a public school teacher to screen mirror my ipad along with student work on a big screen. 

We have 2 ipads that everyone in the house shares. Screen time is necessary and doesn't have to be seen as a negative. Also, buying used or late model devices do suffice.
