In our home we operate as a team and I am so thankful for that because clawing out from under the layers of crust my toddlers leave behind is a task! With the turn of a new season, in an attempt to start it off fresh, here is a list of 50 areas in your home that may need some extra love to usher in the coziness of Fall.
Entry Way Doors
Outside Windows, because who has time to go outside the house to get all of those windows clean regularly?
Our Front Porch is a magnet for toys and mulch that my 1 year old loves to throw around. Just pulling into the drive way reminds me of all of the tasks still left on my plate. I don’t like that feeling. Creating a special parking lot for the bikes and cars will help the little ones keep their special outside toys in order.
Sweep the Porch
We just had our Carpets professionally shampooed, but the living room carpet doesn’t look like it because we didn’t set boundaries for the little ones when it comes to having midday snacks and meals. As a busy parent, setting those boundaries will be crucial to maintaining the cleanliness of those spaces.
All Sheets should be laundered regularly and we do. But going the extra mile to add essential oils to the cycle will be a nice treat as we lay our heads to rest.
All Blankets
All Pillows should be replaced every 1-2 years. I toss pillows in the wash often but, it’s time for new pillows for everyone in the house. Also, don’t forget to wash those fancy throw pillows or get new covers for the ones that are stained beyond recognition. My favorite place to find throw pillow covers is IKEA. I do still love the ones I have in our spaces right now. But I do feel a bedroom refresh coming on for Momma and Daddy.
Why didn't someone warn me about painting my Kitchen Cabinets white? There’s a little bit of everything on my kitchen cabinets right now and I am convinced that until my children are much taller it will remain this way. I do love the look of the white cabinets but they are work to maintain.
Kitchen Ceiling, if you’re thinking huh, just go look up at the area about your stove, especially if you don’t have a fancy hood to catch the splatters and steam from those meals you whip together with love.
Washing your Curtains is just going to increase the entire vibe and the quality of the air in your spaces. Do it now.
Refrigerator
Office Walls
Kitchen Walls
Hall Walls you know what, just all of the doggone walls. Good Lord help us! We are a very artistic and creative family on many fronts and the art on the walls is both troubling yet exciting because they truly love to create. One of the prayers posted on the bathroom door is, “
Baseboards
Microwave
Reorganize the SUV and restock snacks to save yourself a few dollars while keeping everyone happy during fall time commutes to school and sporting events.
There’s an experimental garden in our Frontyard that we’ve grown to love. Naturally because we garden the gardening accessories find their way to the front of the house causing the look of clutter that doesn’t do our beautiful garden any justice. Therefore, a quick tidy and new home for the compost will keep the peaceful vibe I need for that area.
The Backyard has truly become an extension of our daily living environment. This fall I’d like that to continue, but a weekly tidy routine to reset the space is necessary.
Laundry Room
Back Door
I’m not one of those people who likes to use the Top of the Fridge as a space to store things. Somehow, my people tend to put things up there. So it should be interesting to see what Momma discovers atop the refrigerator.
Hood of Stove
Oven
Under Kitchen Sink
Toy Collections should be purged before those gift giving holidays start to roll around.
Inside the Fireplace is essential especially if you plan to use your fireplace as the weather turns frigid. If you’ve never used your fireplace before it should be inspected by a professional before using to avoid dangerous fires and smoke inhalation.
Kids Drawers
Kids Closet
I am wondering how many summer time gardeners are planning to experiment with fall crops? We are, therefore the home we use for our Gardening Materials in our Shed needs some attention.
Shower Walls are just not fun but, I have found that using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser makes this task less tedious for those stubborn spots. Also using a Scot-Brite dish wand is a game changer for cleaning the bathtubs. We don’t use chemicals to clean because cleaning the bathtub that my children are going to get into with chemicals is just unwise for their health. Therefore, I use the same soap I use to bathe with to clean out the bathtub on a regular basis.
Vacuum Cleaners carry so much dust, debris and bacteria. I love my little Shark Robot and it definitely can use a good cleaner and change of the actual filter.
Under Dressers
Before we invested in a water filter Under our Bed was a graveyard for plastic water bottles. I am curious about what I shall find under there during this deep cleaning session.
Toiletry Closets should be checked regularly. Don’t forget to look at expiration dates and safely dispose of any expired items especially, chemicals and medications.
Seasoning Cabinet, please do it now! Just throw out seasonings you have not used in years and commit to doing better by resisting the urge to buy the newest flavor on the shelves in the grocery store as you shop while you're hungry.
Vents, because I am sure the BoogeyMan is living there.
My Kid’s Kitchen Set lives in the kitchen and my son has recently tried to cook real food there without asking. He’s cracked eggs in his pots, “refried” his leftover breakfast a few times and well we never know what the little chef will cook up next. Every lady loves a man who can cook so we’re embracing this new skill.
The Fireplace Ledge can use a bit of love. I think adding fresh cut flowers from our garden may discourage the placement of random items.
TV Screens
Guys, our Lamp Shades even have artwork on them from our toddlers. Therefore, I shall thrift a new set. It’ll give me a reason to duck away on a Sunday afternoon for some mommy alone time.
Not only do I have to Dust the Frames, with 2 little ones I have to reconsider the placement of family photos. The collage I had in my stairway has dwindled as the year has progressed as little bottoms bop down the stairs with the urgency to do life with us. Those frames have tumbled down the stairs to their demise.
Unpack Forgotten Luggage and Travel Toiletry Bags
The Ceiling Fans need my attention. Did you know that there’s a little switch on the side of the ceiling fans? Using them to switch the direction of your fan blades will help you control the temperature in your home, so you can save on both cooling and heating costs. Every little bit helps.
Swifter ALL Floors. I’m wondering if I am the only one grossed out by a mop and the whole process of recycling the dirty water in the mop bucket as you clean the floor? I just can’t; so I prefer Swiffer pads and just spray tough spots with a nontoxic multipurpose cleaner.
Light Switches
Cubbies or that random corner with a cardboard box shoved there with odds and ends from Lordt knows when.
Closet Bins with seasonal gear because as the weather shifts we will need an inventory of what each person has and what Momma should be keeping her eye out for.
Under the Stove and please resist counting the number of Cheerios you find under there please.
Philippians 2:14, Do all things without grumbling.
Moms have this keen awareness of the layers of filth in the home that no one else has a radar for. With the demands of daily life, it’s just tough to get these areas on a daily basis. So as you uncover the mini messes don’t harp about it. Do it with a loving heart and the pure desire to set the tone in your home for the cozy moments the fall has in store for us.
Sherrie is a 41 year old mom of 3 who enjoys writing poetry and spending time with her family. She believes that maintaining the home is a shared process and all family members should be involved. May we continue to let go of gender roles and traditions that no longer serve us.
