Clutter by definition is to crowd something untidily. In 2020, I began to take a realistic look at the items we had in our home. The physical clutter in our space has disappeared and it has felt so amazing to pull it all out and let go of things that served no purpose for my family.
We honestly don’t miss the items we’ve donated or sold for small sums of cash on platforms like Offer Up and Facebook Marketplace.
2020 had my eyes WIDDDDDDE OPEN to alot and I am not just talking about the insane amount of physical clutter I found in our home but the hidden amount of emotional dust that was clinging to my heart, mind and soul.
There were new wounds and now here we are at the end of 2023 and I am dealing with the most traumatic experience of my adult life. Trauma will certainly expose the most seemingly dusty parts of our being. The areas that we thought we submitted to God but, somehow we’ve managed to pick up again. Unbeknownst to us we’ve held on to the old ways of thinking and being because it’s how we’ve fought to survive our entire lives.
I need you to know that you are worth the time and the energy it takes to tend to your needs if you’re experiencing a difficult moment in your story called life. You’re not broken because things feel out of order during a difficult experience. You may just need the time to figure out how to put the pieces in the right place to remain at peace. This may feel uncomfortable but, you’re not broken.
Like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces are all there, but time and help may be needed to make the pieces fit together.
Don’t start throwing pieces of you away because the world makes you feel like you don’t fit because you’ve found yourself in a difficult space.
As of late I am doing more mental decluttering instead of focusing on material items the world has to offer. I’m dusting off the corners of my mind, heart and soul to be able to rest and relax because our heart, mind and soul need to be able to do that in every season. This has been the perfect gift for me to unwrap in this season.
Practical ways we can mentally declutter look different for each person, but here’s what we can at least try to begin the process:
I always say, write until your heart's content. This can be a great practice to express your emotions and track growth. I have journals from nearly each year of my life since I was 13 years old. The research says that those people who journal consistently are more resilient and happier individuals. I also journal what I am feeling with a commitment to muster up the courage to move forward in spite of the challenges.
According to researchers, “picking up a coloring pencil and book could be beneficial for your mental health. A new study reveals coloring can help to improve mood, reduce stress and boost creativity.” Coloring can help you channel your inner artist, de-stress and bring a sense of peace.
We need to be able to exchange every negative thought or behavior for a positive one. But, we don’t know what we don’t know. There’s nothing like digging into the word of God to discover all He has to say about you and the promises He has made for each one of us no matter what we look like, how we’ve sinned or how flawed we tend to make ourselves out to be. There are a lot of self help books I’ve read over the last 7 months but, there’s nothing that holds more true and specific to me than what God says to me during my private prayer and reading time.
Some physical symptoms we experience in our bodies may have a direct correlation to our feelings or emotional health. Having direct access to my primary doctor via the online platforms has been a game changer. I no longer have to wait months for appointments to chat about that one thing that’s bothering me. Therefore, make a note for you to inquire about the virtual platforms your physicians are using to communicate daily with patients.
There’s a lack of knowledge about the type of services certain therapists may provide. We commonly only think of talk therapy. But there are others such as EMDR therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, solution focused brief therapy, psychodynamic therapy, physical therapy. The goal is to move toward total wholeness therefore, doing a deep dive into learning about these therapeutic options may be beneficial.
Walking daily is not only good exercise but it relaxes the brain. Walking outside allows us to shift our focus to other stimuli in our natural environment. It’s truly beautiful. There is so much research about the benefits of walking, especially near water.
