Great Migration Coaster

History

The Great Migration refers to the movement of over 6 million African Americans to the urban Northeast from the deep South. Prior to this event, more than 90% of the African American population lived in the South This migration occurred from 1916 until 1970, and was spurred on by WWI. The draft of millions of young working class men during WWI, in turn left millions of factory and other similar positions vacant in the urban Northeast. Seeking an escape from the relentless racism present in the South, African Americans saw this as a chance to escape and have a stable job waiting for them in the more progressive Northern states.
