History

The automobile, and more specifically the Ford Model T, started to be sold in 1908, but was given a very limited, aristocratic audience. however, given the economic prosperity in the early 1920s, the automobile became extremely commonplace. By the very end of the 1920s, in total Americans own 23 million cars, or roughly 80% percent of the world's total automobiles. The auto industry stimulated steel, rubber, glass, chemical, and petroleum production, and roughly created, both indirectly and directly, around 3.7 million jobs. With the influx of cars, suburban shopping centers, motels, gas stations, drive-in restaurants, and many other commercial establishments were popping up everywhere. Nevertheless, there were troubles that arose because of the automobile. While everyone had one, not everyone had enough to purchase one. This meant that many, many cars were purchased with credit and car loans, which, inevitably, lead to the bursting of the bubble in 1929.
