This psalm is much the same as the five last verses of the 40th. In it David prays, (1.) For divine help to himself, ver. 1, 5. (2.) For shame and confusion to his enemies, ver. 2-3. (3.) For joy and comfort to his friends, ver. 4.
While I sing, let me apply it to my own troubled circumstances, and so in a believing manner, bring them and the sinful causes thereof, to my remembrance.
1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance. Make haste, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O LORD.
2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.
4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
5 But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.
FIRST VERSION (S.M.)
1 Lord, haste me to deliver;
with speed, Lord, succour me.
2 Let them that for my soul do seek
sham'd and confounded be:
Turn'd back be they, and sham'd,
that in my hurt delight.
3 Turn'd back be they, Ha, ha! that say,
their shaming to requite.
4 In thee let all be glad,
and joy that seek for thee:
Let them who thy salvation love
say still, God praised be.
5 I poor and needy am;
come, Lord, and make no stay:
My help thou and deliv'rer art;
O Lord, make no delay.
SECOND VERSION (C.M.)
1 Make haste, O God, me to preserve;
with speed, Lord, succour me.
2 Let them that for my soul do seek
sham'd and confounded be:
Let them be turned back, and sham'd,
that in my hurt delight.
3 Turn'd back be they, Ha, ha! that say,
their shaming to requite.
4 O Lord, in thee let all be glad,
and joy that seek for thee:
Let them who thy salvation love
say still, God praised be.
5 But I both poor and needy am;
come, Lord, and make no stay:
My help thou and deliv'rer art;
O Lord, make no delay.
Celestial and heavenly Father, the protector and defender of all them that put their confidence in thee: haste thee to help us, and destroy the counsels of all them that scorn us, because we trust in thy goodness. Grant that all they that seek thee in their whole heart, and call upon thee in spirit and verity, may have continually new occasions to praise and magnify thy holy name, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour.
