Class Name: EE 152 (High Frequency Systems Laboratory)
Institution: Caltech (Undergrad)
Project Duration: November-December 2024
Project Description: Build a Doppler radar to clock speeds of oncoming cars to within 10% accuracy.
Joint project with Nerissa Finnen and Yao Huang. All subsystem and system testing done together.
They handled antenna fabrication and tuning, LNA design, and soldering of the boards. I designed the Wilkinson and IF-side system. The Doppler analysis code was provided as part of the project.
Final report (Includes all calculations and results)
Demo video -- us clocking Yao driving down Del Mar. We read 38 mph, he was going 40 mph.
Link to the code we were using in the video, and to the MP3 file obtained on that run. Slightly modified from the template code to have a lowpass filter at the beginning of the code, and to adjust the color parameters on the plot to show our ranges of speeds most intensely.
Testing the radar in-lab
Putting everything together!
MP3 file analyzed during demo. Can you hear how much faster Yao was going than the car in front of him?
A different kind of sound occurs when you wave your hand in front of the radar (lab test)
Bonus: our radar was suspected of being part of a bomb threat on campus!

Not fun to get kicked out of my dorm right after the all nighter I pulled for this project...
