"A GOOD COACH CAN CHANGE A GAME, A GREAT COACH CAN CHANGE A LIFE."
- JOHN WOODEN
IN GAME:
Games are a showcase of how well our practices are structured and should reflect the players' day-to-day work. It's crucial for players and coaches to have practiced various scenarios and prepared adjustments before game competition. Without this preparation, it's unreasonable to expect players to be comfortable in high-pressure situations. To ensure readiness, we will diagram every offensive, out-of-bounds, end-of-game play, set series, motion offense, and special situation plays. Each opponent will be scouted and shot charted, with a breakdown of player and team tendencies.
Players will receive the same packet of plays as the coaches, facilitating easier in-game adjustments and ensuring that players are comfortable with our strategies. This approach also helps coaches understand what plays are most effective and have been practiced.
As a coach, maintaining composure during games is essential. A calm demeanor sets a positive example for players, teaching them to stay focused and calm under pressure. Mistakes, bad calls and unlucky bounces are inevitable in a game, but a composed coach can think clearly, make better decisions, and focus on the task at hand. This composure also allows coaches to model a "Next Play Mentality" for players. While there are times to raise intensity, challenge players and address poor attitudes/sportsmanship, staying calm a majority of the time helps coaches effectively communicate, provide feedback, and guide players in a constructive manner.
