ACADEMIC GOALS:
Our players must understand that they are students first and that education will take them further in life than athletics will. The goals for our student-athletes in academic achievement are:
100% of athletes in our program academically eligible each grading period.
Have consistent academic All-District /All-State players.
Every athlete in our program passing the state assessment tests.
Every athlete in our program, by their senior year, having taken the SAT or ACT and making a high enough grade to be eligible for a college athletic scholarship.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT-ATHLETES:
1. Understand the correlation between education and athletics. You can only go as far as your education takes you.
2. Apply the same intensity and dedication towards education as you do athletics.
3. Understand that you are the student and not an authority figure. There is a hierarchy in place. Do everything that the teacher asks, unless it is immoral or illegal.
4. Be a role model student.
Sit in the front of the class
Listen with your eyes
Stay off of your phones and take earbuds out.
Be responsible in turning in assignments. Turn them in on time.
Be respectful and develop a relationship with each teacher and learn to communicate with them.
Display academic honesty by doing your own work.
ACADEMIC MANAGEMENT:
The very foundation of our success on the court is a direct result of our dedication to our student-athletes in the classroom. Consistent academic monitoring is the main reason why we as a team will remain academically responsible throughout the entire school year. This program is a proven winner that will enable us to take our players to the next level upon graduation.
ACADEMIC MONITORING OPERATION:
Each week, all class grades will be checked for each athlete.
All assistant coaches are assigned a group of student-athletes to review grades with.
Athletes who fail to meet the academic standards will meet individually with their assigned coach and the head coach.
The assistant coach will contact the parents of each athlete failing to meet the standards in place.
The player will have a mandatory grade sheet that must be signed by each teacher and tutoring will be scheduled by the player and communicated to the assigned coach. Coach will follow up about tutorial attendance with the teacher(s).
If a pattern of failure continues, a meeting between player, parents, and the head coach will be arranged, and a behavior contract will be outlined. In this signed contract, it will be clear between the parents and the athlete what the consequences of consistent failure will be.
Assistant coaches will be responsible for contacting specific teachers to identify what can be done to help the athlete.
Keeping up with good academic standards will be rewarded in our pre-season and off-season competition points system.
This plan will help develop positive relationships between the parents, head coach, players, faculty, and coaching staff. It sets an academic standard within the athletic program that holds athletes and coaches accountable for their grades and the importance of their education.
