Artifact Description:
This artifact is a math lesson plan about adding and subtracting 10 and 100.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to indicator 5K: "The competent teacher varies his or her role in the instructional process as instructor, facilitator, coach, or audience in relation to the content and purposes of instruction and the needs of students." The artifact connects to the indicator because through my implementation of the lesson plan, I changed my role in the instructional process. During the first activity, I modeled the skill for the students, so I served as an instructor. During the second activity, the students worked in partners, so I was more of a facilitator for the students as I circulated around the room and provided support as needed. During the third activity, the students worked independently, so I served in any role that was necessary for each individual student. Therefore, I changed my role based on the activities and the specific needs of the students during the instructional process.
What I Learned:
Through the creation and implementation of this artifact, I learned how to very clearly use the gradual release of responsibility to teach a new concept to students.
Artifact Description:
This artifact is a visual representation of four math stations that I could use in a second-grade classroom to allow students to work on geometry standards and the fifth mathematical practice.
Connection to Standard:
This artifact connects to indicator 5F: "The competent teacher knows strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement." The artifact connects to the indicator because I identified instructional strategies that would keep students engaged and focused on the tasks and concepts at hand during the stations.
What I Learned:
By creating these math stations, I learned how to include math manipulatives in activities for students in order to allow students to visualize concepts and develop a deeper understanding of them.
