We are pleased to announce that for the Spring 2023 semester the GSLIS will offer academic scholarships to support matriculated students considering research projects in the field of youth literacy; focused upon youth, whose ages or academic progress might place them in grades K – 12. As an example, these projects might include but are not limited to research looking at the impact or the support of literacies in different everyday contexts such as libraries, schools, and community organizations. Some examples of research projects in the field of youth literacy may be found at the American Library Association website.

The scholarship money will be used to pay the awardees tuition for LBSCI 709 (Research in Library and Information Studies) and/or LBSCI 710 (Applied Research in Information Studies). If the awardees have already taken LBSCI 709 prior to being awarded the scholarship, the scholarship money may be used to pay for up to two LBSCI 710 courses, whose content relates to youth literacy. The courses may be taken in successive semesters. At the end of the course(s), the awardees will provide a copy of the course deliverable to the AASSA Committee. In addition, the awardees will provide a two-page summary of their projects, which may be used to promote this scholarship to future candidates.

The AASSA Committee will consider the following factors during its review of applications:

1. Applicants have completed at least 18 credits by the end of the Fall 2022 semester

2. Applicants are taking or have taken one or more of the following courses: LBSCI 737, 739, 764, 765, 767, 773, or 777

3. Applicants have at least a 3.5 GPA (as it appears in an unofficial transcript)

Applications should be sent in one email submission with attachments (.doc, .docx or .pdf) to Dr. Shuheng Wu, Chair of the GSLIS AASSA Committee, at Shuheng.Wu@qc.cuny.edu and should include the following:

1. The completed application form (see immediately below)

2. A research project proposal (500-1000 words) addressing the following:

a. Research Statement—What is your research topic? How does it relate to youth literacy?

b. Goals—What is the expected outcome of your research project?

c. Your background—What elements in your background or education will facilitate the goals?

d. Project plan—How will you accomplish the outcome? What methods and strategies will you use? What is your schedule for accomplishing this plan?

3. A current unofficial student transcript

Incomplete applications will not be considered. The deadline for applications is Thursday, November 10, 2022, 11:59 PM EST. The AASSA Committee exercises the right to determine the number of scholarships awarded each semester. Students may receive an Ellen Libretto and Adam Conrad scholarship only once while enrolled at the GSLIS.
